Would you put Dreads on your Child?

General Talk

I have two children --a teenage son and an 11 year old girl. My son decided (before me lol) that he wanted dreads so we of course let him. On the other hand, my daughter (who has long, wavy hair) has told me that although she loves dreadlocks--she doesn't want them herself...and honestly this drives me crazy because she hates brushing her hair and if we don't bug her about it everyday she just doesn't brush. It always ends up with me separating dreads that have formed in her hair and suggesting keeping the dreadlocks and her saying nope. :PWhen my children were very young we decided that we would never force any of the things on our children that were forced on us as we grew up. Therefore my children were both brought up as vegetarians (I didn't cook meat and didn't want to feed it to them before they could make the decision to eat flesh themselves.) When they were old enough and had all of the facts regarding eating meat vs. being vegetarian they both opted for veganism. Of course they always had the opportunity to try flesh when they were at relatives and friends houses and we never discouraged them if they wanted to taste different things.I guess we take this same approach towards dreading hair-if I had it to do over (now that I know much more about dreadlocks and the process and history etc) I would most likely let their hair dread since that is the most natural state imo, and when they were old enough to make the choice they could opt for whatever styles they wanted. As far as other people/children making fun--my babies were brought up to be proud of their differences and uniqueness--they know that people are usually mean because they are either feeling threatened and scared , feeling jealousy, or simply don't know any better. And btw--Pranee I would LOVE to see pictures of your punk rock baby! Sounds adorable :)And Island Mamma your daughter is beautiful, just like her mommy!

seriously, coca cola dreadlocks?! and blah, cigarette smoke

Dreading Methods

Bet coca cola would get rid of the cigarette smell :Pjust kidding but wow I never had the desire to put anything sticky like poop in my hair...Don't people realize that coka cola can take the paint off your car--I cant imagine what it would do to your hair if left in. Might as well use bubblegum lol :D

i want dreads, but i dont want dreads that look like dreads

Dreading Methods

Made me think of this quote by Ghandi:Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.~Sums up my dread journey perfectly! What is good for me is good for me and what is good for you is good for you :) I don't see the point in putting down someones hair style just because they like neat/uniformed/maintained/lumpy/natural/frizzy/WHATEVER Personally I love my crazy looking curly dreads but that (IMO) doesn't give me the right to judge how some one else loves their locks or say (YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!) lol only when someone is crocheting or sticking sharp objects in their hair/eyes etc I think its helpful to maybe let them know they are doing damage....Love to allkimba The Dreaded Shell said:

What is the quickest way to get rid of Lice period , dreadlocks or not.

Dread Maintenance

So sorry to hear about your lil tag -a- longs--I'm geting itchy just reading about lice lol. I would try what Soaringeagle said. When we were living in Florida lice was such a big problem in the school system there that even though my kids were homeschooled they still got lice just from riding in my neighbors car! What we did was try the mayonnaise thing, which did nothing, tried vinegar which also did nothing and then even bought the chemical lice kit which killed the bugs but not the nits.. We got rid of them by sitting each night with my poor daughter (who was around 6 at the time and had enough trouble as it was with sitting still long enough to brush her hair regularly lol) and comb through tiny sections of her hair with the lice comb until we couldnt find any eggs AT ALL-- this would take like an hour a night but after a few weeks they were all gone. We also had to take all of her clothes, bedding, soft toys etc, and either put them in garbage bags for 3 weeks or put them into a HOT dryer at the laundromat for a long time. Remember to do that last step with your bedding etc. or all the work you go through getting rid of them will be for nothing. I wish I had heard of the oil Soaringeagle is reffering to--it would have saved us so much time and energy!I still get twitchy when I think about lice! The funny thing was that my older son stopped washing his hair because he heard lice were attracted to clean hair more than dirty hair--he put a bunch of hairspray and junk in his hair and lo and behold he never got lice (I think the bugs took one look at his hair and got scared)...I wouldnt reccomend this method though--just kinda thought it was funny :PGood luck with removing those buggers and do us a favor and post what you end up using that works!Lovekimba

First dread! In progress

Introduce Yourself

My hubby wasnt all too thrilled when I first decided to let my hair dread but now he really loves my hair--mine was almost exactly like yours--curly...Your first dread is beautiful, not sloppy at all, and so much nicer than mine was when I first started. :) Mine are coming along naturally now after I initially backcombed some, twisted and ripped some and some are just natural all the way but they are all different and I love them!Keep us updated on your progress and I hope your day is happier than the last :DLovekimba
