Loss of my love

General Talk

Getting wasted daily isn't going to do you any good, short or long term. Counselling is your first step. A support group will show you physically that you're not alone & there will be others in similar situations more than willing to help you through the dark times. I sincerely hope you will take the advice the guys here are offering. Developing a destructive habit will make things far worse than they need to be. Please keep yourself focused on all the beautiful, positive things about your life with him & remember you are blessed to have had such a bond. Don't let this beat you.

Reasons for starting your dreadlocks?

General Talk

To be honest, I really don't know what has struck a chord in me with dreadlocks? Maybe it was seeing Predator for the first time as a kid. Might have been the first time I saw a guy with them and thought "cool, he has a different style to everyone else I've seen in my life up to this point". I do know though that I had wanted to dread my hair from my mid teens. So used to toeing the line and putting on a behaved front, the furthest I went was growing it long, shaving it bald then growing it long again. After having an emotional and spiritual rollercoaster ride over the last few years I have found the things that truly give me solace are not material. Being strong enough to have faith that my family and friends will accept me exactly as I am. I had finally started getting tattoos, it raised some eyebrows but I was not blacklisted! Then more dark clouds presented themselves (I'm being dramatic! It's just the dissolution of a relationship I believed to be stronger than it really was...) and I found myself reverting to being my true self regardless of the opinion of anyone else. Through dreadlocks I have found the real friends who do not judge. Sure I may get a few cheeky comments here and there but as a whole I feel very accepted and blessed. I have not been happier with my appearance my whole life. As petty as it sounds to concern one's self with appearance, I truly feel like I am finally in my own skin!Thank you knotted up hair, you are one of my saviors!:D

WTF!?!?!?!

General Talk

What an awkward, awkward little business man. Granted, his dreads look good (my opinion), but in the time it would take to apply tacky wax, then smooth a butter over them so people wanna eat em? Man... I could be riding one of my bikes, or having a swim, or catching up on sleep.Orrrrr, just a theory, watching the progression of my hair busting out some sick as bro loops and twirls and spirals. Better than any tv show!

It's Official!!!

There's a YouTube vid titled "neglect dreads 2 years" by futurama5656. I think he started from bald or stubble whatever. Anyway, after 2 years his dead straight hair has dreaded as it grew. He has a fair bit of undressed hair, lots of different thickness, zigs & zags and a couple congoes. It looks pretty cool, he seems really happy with it & made me real that "perfect" dreads are not so desirable to me. Take a look at the video, it may or may not inspire you a little more to keep em taking their own course.

Thanks, man. That's kinda how I felt. I'll just know when to separate. Thanks again! I like your new DP by the way. It's bad ass. Iain said:
YOu'll feel it in your heart when it's correct to separate, (corny advice lol but I think it;s partly true)
you'll be able to see roughly how they're gonna form, (cept for maybe the back but you can feel it glad to see you hit your first milestone coming from such a long journey.

Patience poster boy... I like that:) I'm feelin plenty of respect for your patience GG. I wish I had started totally natural rather than tnr but there's no way I would have waited so long once my decision to finally dread was made. Kudos!!

Manicured Locks

Dread Maintenance

In this day and age of pierced everything, stretched out lobes, dyed every which colour hair, tattoos, contact lenses, funky make-up (shall I go on?) dreads will get more and more accepted as a personal choice. Never mainstream, but acceptance seems to come and go from trend to trend. Eventually people with dreads will be pointed at for being late in on the trend rather than different. Anyway, that's a tangent. My advice would be to follow the advice handed out here by the caring generous community members. Wax will gunk you up and I'm positive it's one of the main reasons dreads have a reputation for being dirty and smelly! It's completely possible to keep your new dreads neat by tying them up. I run a warehouse so mine are always out but when I have meetings with the white collar crew even I tie em up loosely in a quasi bun type thing. No one says anything detrimental with a serious tone. As they mature they'll only get neater as well.Just go for it!
