Help! Save My Dreads

you could run your fingers thru my hair... its that soft and smooth. its crazy. i have hair that most women wished they had. its shiney, silky smooth, not oily, straight/wavy, and it wont fucking lock up!!! i did the rip and twist method at the end of december and finished on Jan1st and just left them alone. no palm rolling or wax or crochet ('cept for the first few). i was washing every 3-4days with coco castile bar soap, which made my hair too soft. i started wearing a wool tam/beaning everyday at the end of jan and by then most of the twist and rip dreads fell apart. i started using bs/acv wash/rinse method and by week 2 of febuary, i noticed that some of the loose hair began to clump together and looked dreaded a little. i palm rolled/twisted a couple times after my showers as well as sea salt spray about once or twice a week, a few hours before my shower. at this point i have some knotted hair but its still all loose and straight and not locked into clumps anymore. now i'm super bummed. i dont know what to do and with shaggy hair i'm loosing out on job opportunities as well as pissing off my wife. she was against this thing from the beginging and went with it anyway hoping to see the results and now she's seen her hard work (she did the T&R) fall apart. nothing to show... and i dont know what to do about it. a part of me says to say fuck it and make my life easier and go get a haircut. but another part of me says fuck that. i dont know what i want to do and i'm not looking for you to fix my delima. but if you see my page and blogs and see where i started this, maybe you could give me your perspective. maybe you have an encouraging story or insight.

politicians with dreads...

General Talk

does anyone know of a politician (local, state, ect.) with dreads? Do you think mainstream america would vote a "dread head" in office into a washington level position? just curious...

Twist & rip question

Dreading Methods

i just did the twist and rip method and i have to say, its pretty much a neglect method. for me anyway, after i did the T&R, the hair on the outter portions of my sections came undone and i ended up with a bunch of loose hairs everywhere. my locks were pretty nice when first finished but now i'm playing the waiting game and just letting my hair do its own thing to achieve gnarly locks. if you want a "neat" looking set of dreads from day 1, you might want to crochet, but that ruins locks, or you could use wax to keep all the hair down, but that stuff is grimey and ruins locks... from my understanding of what a dreadlock is, its neglected (intentionally uncombed) sections of hair that mat and knot together. as far as your loose root goes, let it be. your hair is going to do whatever it wants when dreaded. i've heard that having your roots a little loose is good for the dreading process. idk about any of this really. i've just done a lot of research and read a lot. i am lacking in real dread expericnce, so take this with a grain of salt.

Now ready to start the process after many many years

Introduce Yourself

wash clean with fresh water and a "no drying residue" soap. then do your twist and rip with dry hair. after that, you can add the aloe if you want to. i use an all natural soap to wash my hair, "kirks origional coco castile" its made with coconut oil and i read that coconut oil helps dandruff... it works. i use the salt water whenever, not often tho. i added about a tablespoon of seasalt to warm water and stirred, then put it in a spray bottle. spray and let dry. i guess the salt adds texture to the hair and helps it get knotted...it works too. i hope this helps. good luck.

Does palm rolling damage your dreads in any way

Dread Maintenance

i retract my statement about palmrolling my hair and how my hair reacts to it.palmrolling now does wonders for my new locks. sometimes i do s pinch, roll and twist type of thing with my fingers. it seems to work nicely for thinner locks.

Dread Maintenance

it straightens my hair and unlocks my dreads... i have to say that it does un-flatten them (flat from wearing a hat, i think).

A few questions before I dread

General Questions

start by growing some more hair, then do the twist and rip (T&R) method. the natural is probably better tho. if youre in middle school and your 'rents dont suck, do it. i should have done it in middle school. use this site and navigate the forums to search for any question you have. if you have a question, the answer is posted on this site somewhere. spend the time to research and be patient while that hair grows. i did my locks with 6-7" of hair. i think it was a good length to work with,

rubber bands @ the tips

Dreading Methods

my dreads were locked day one. my wife twist and ripped them in nice. the only loose hair is the hair on the outter portions of the sections, with an exception of a few that are really loose. they didnt stay locked after i showered and washed my hair. and i did use the word, "tightER" . . . i never said my dreads were all tight, i just noticed a difference between the ones with the bands in comparison to the ones without.... i know theyre a week old and stuffcomes undone, but i'm working with tight knots in themiddle of most dreads. the twist and rip method works really well.so its all good. thanks for posting.
