rubber bands @ the tips

Dreading Methods

so, when my dreads were finished, my wife put tiny rubberbands on the tips to help hold them together. a lot of posts said that this wasnt a great idea, but it just made sence or my hair type. my dreads are a week old and all the rubber bands are out. a bunch of bands fell out on their own, the rest i removed. if the band didnt fall out on its own, it was because the dread "ate"it up. i'm glad i removed the ones i did. if i hadnt and left them in another week, i would probably have to cut them out. they did hold the lock together well. i think that the locks that had the bands on the longest, are tighter at their core, maybe. so really, idk whats best. this is just what i've gone thru this week...

Dreads and the "man..."

General Talk

nice. A+ and 5 gold stars

Image is everything in our society (especially for women) and your perceived value & worth is usually tied to how much you conform to the status quo. The less you look like everyone else, the more "threatening" you are to the social order, because the more you are directly challenging people to think outside their own narrow boxes -- and challenging their own levels of conformity. And most people find that uncomfortable to deal with.

Dreads and the "man..."

General Talk

cops are the "man" .... i meant like, corporate/industrial america... it seems like its only accepted in america on white people if those people are in the arts, of some sort. as a commercial electrician i know that if i wasnt laid off right now, i wouldnt be able to start this process. I live in Fla. mostly and florida construction is run by good ole boys who arent very accepting of things that are different or new. it would definately not be easy to re-enter the workforce here with dreads.

hey mia, the first 2 dreads were backcombed and hooked. after that we went with T&R and only backcombed spots that stalled in locking, then continued to T&R. Kris put in rubber bands at the tips to keep my supa slick hair together. those are gone now and the core of each dread is locked tight. thanks a ton. God bless.

To Krista- I think it's totally awesome that although you are having your doubts about dreads and their classiness on a night out you still helped him. Not that my opinion matters or is law but you are a great wife/friend/person.

To Sacho- what method did you do to start the dreading process?

I started with backcombing and i must warn you most if not all my efforts to speed the dreading process failed because my hair is as stubborn and freedom-seeking as me.

Just know that if they all come undone they will dread on their own PROMISE.

If there is anything I learned from my journey(4months) is to respect my hair and it's wishes.

Peace & love,

Mia

thanks. i already had a slight feeling of discouragement when i got out of the car, after a long drive with the windows down. i looked into the glass and saw my hair everywhere. its all good tho. no worries. i would just hate to see things come undone.

Don't be discouraged when they go crazy and start coming undone and get all twisty and loopy for the first few months.

they'll be awesome if you just separate and wash when needed!

congrats!
