My dreads are coming apart!!!

General Questions

don't worry about it :) I freaked out at first ha ha still kind of freaking about it too even though I know it's supposed to be doin thatIt's kind of funny, once you make them they look amazing and perfect, huh! a month or so later they're all comin out and getting crazy and natty, everyone kept asking if I was taking them out and tellin me to fix em up. I spent hours of unneccesary work on my hair, ughh it wasn't fun fretting so much! I just learned to let it do it's own thing. You're dreads will feel so much more natural on your head once they figure out where they want to be!Peace!

Any new dreadies getting this?

General Talk

yeah, I get that. I only have like one friend with dreads, and I never get to see him. I've been at it for something like 6 or 7 months, maybe 8, and they're still not matured yet. I always think it's not gonna work, but then I see someone with gorgeous dreads, and think "Wow, mine will be like that someday. I know it." And then seeing the people that are just starting them up, ya know, send on some encouragement to them :)

I see someone who needs saving!

General Talk

There's these things (not sure what they're called) that you can print designs out on them, just like paper, but they can be ironed onto shirts. Draw up a design, put it on the computer, print it out on the paper, and iron it on to a blank shirt, and then wear the shirt and hopefully he'll see it :D

shortest length to start dreads??

General Questions

somewhere from 4-6 inches was ok for me, cause by the time they started really shrinking, my hair had grown out a bit more

is this a good shampoo?

General Questions

looks good nough to me mana good rule to go buy is to make sure you can read the ingredients. If you know what it all is, and it ain't abunch of chems and crap, then it should be safe. Beware of things that say "natural" cause a lot of things i've seen, after lookin in the ingredients, is really full of crap I don't want near my dreadies. Dr. Bronners is a good one that I use, I buy the bar soap though cause it lasts longer and it's a lot cheaper, 4$ for a bar that's lasted me months.peace

need advice on combing out dreads!

General Questions

ooh coloring :( Was it one that was specifically for dreads? I've heard a lot of hair coloring chems make your dreads brittle and cause them to fall apart like that...So sorry for your loss, better luck next time hopefully!

who here has dreads and isn't Rastafarian?

General Talk

Right on mama hippie mama said:
i have respect for your beliefs and i think its great that ur proud enough of it to try to educate others on your beliefs. i however am not a rastafarian nor do i claim to be and just as others have told you in their comments dreads are from nature and ppl had them from the beginning of time. not just rastas but all beliefs and i mean if u dont have a comb pretty much ur hairs gonna dread. so to say their true nature comes from the rastafarian background only would be such a miss-guided statement. i think you would be interested in researching back to see where else the may have derived from. also what other role they play in other religious backgrounds. i mean beleive what you believe dude and be proud of it but take a step back to realize there is more to everything than what you believe and keep your heart eyes and ears open to learn so much more about others and you may find out more about yourself in the journey,
peace be with you friend
~i really hope on your journey not only will u preach but you will be taught as well~

Surviving the Awkward stage!

General Talk

Still in the awkward stage! This takes a lot of work, but this is what I did to keep them toned down a bit.1. Buy some floss. About 2 containers of it2. Get a friend to wrap every single dread in it. Best way is to tie a knot at the root, wind down (tightly) to the middle, another knot, down to the tip, (leave an inch at the end) knot, middle, knot, back to the root, and knot.3. Once you have them all done, they will be sticking out EVERYWHERE. Don't worry, sleep with a beanie or tam or do-rag on your head overnight and as much as you can, and in about a day it'll be flat. Some will come undone when you wash your hair, or if they aren't tight enough, or for various other reasons. You can leave them like that or re-wrap them if yah want. It also helps your hair dread faster, if you leave it in for a 2 weeks to 6 weeks, depending on how fast your hair dreads, maybe longer. When you take all of the floss out, your hair will look great. But one thing that has been mentioned is the patience. I've learned it through my dreads. It's definitley not an overnight thing :)Keep it up sista, peace

Surviving the Awkward stage!

General Talk

How much would you charge to make me a tam? :) Faelwynn said:
I'm completely still there! I'm 5 months in, and just now starting to see really good locking all over! I crochet, so my tams are all made by myself, with wool yarns that I hand select to be incredibly unique, and to my own liking. I've wrapped a few at one point with wool, and now I just keep them clean and let them be!
