No length?

Dread Maintenance

My dreads did not start gaining length until after the 2 year mark. Actually my hair got a lot shorter in the first 2 years. They shrink and tighten for a very long time. When I started dreading my hair was to my waist. It shrank to above my shoulders. At 3 years it was about down to my arm pits. At 4 years it was halfway down my back and almost as long as it was when I started. At 5 years it was below my waist. My dreads will be 6 years old this winter and the longest dreads touch my ass. I am kinda guessing here...but I figure each inch of my dread equals about 2 to 3 inches of undreaded hair. So if I were to comb it out...it would touch the floor.

Gray Hairs

Introduce Yourself

I am a whole lot older...but I only have a few sparklies in my hair. My grandfather still is not completely grey at 96 years of age. My father is 75 and only has grey at his temples. So I am not expecting silver hair for a long long time. Digressed there sorry. What I was wanting to say is that the few grey hairs that I do have...I love. It is like having tinsel or glitter hiding in my dreads !! It is just a little bit of twinkle that mother nature gave me!! If it does happen to be grey hair growing out of your own head and not your cat's....embrace it!! Love it!! It is really just star shine!!

Why no touch?

Dread Maintenance

Because people use their fingers to comb through the hair when washing without even realizing it. It undoes any knots that have formed. You should scrub your scalp. It helps wash way any flakes. I have always dried my hair with a towel. I don't go crazy with the towel but i do try to get the excess water out so that it does not drip down my back all day. It still takes several hours to air dry after that.

Not sure what to think about my dreads, don't think they fit well : (

Help! Save My Dreads

My hair looked so crazy for a year or so. It was really an ugly mess. The reason you don't see a lot of long locks is because people give up so quickly. Dreads take time and patience. People want the instant look of mature dreads...but that just doesn't happen. Don't be one of those people that give up. Just let them mature. Don't worry about what other people think.

Recommended Shampoos?

Introduce Yourself

I do use Vicki's bars...but when I am out (and I am out right now ) I use Kiss My Face brand shampoo. It is called Whenever. It is safe, healthy and has a lovely citrus smell. Someone told me recently that they have seen it at Wallmart but I purchase it from my local health food store. It costs me about $7.

Animal Lover

Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures

The Native Americans honored all life and they hunted. They would say a prayer over all of their kills to send the soul to the spiritual hunting grounds. They had complete respect for the animal and thought of it as a gift. They actually saw and touched the animals that fed them where as now people buy meat in little plastic wrapped containers sitting on the shelf.

Respect is not actually love I guess...but it is pretty damned close.

New to Forum. Dreadlocks for 2 years and 8 months. They are my true love.

Introduce Yourself

I attended a S.C.A. event many years ago. I was commissioned to make goblets for it and was curious to see what went on. Although I do not claim to know everything about the group, I did enjoy myself. Apparently I am in Nant Y Derwyddon in the Kingdom of Meridies. I just looked it up. Apparently it is not very active. The last event was in August.

When I attended there was an active group at the University. I have seen nor heard anything about them in years. Which is very sad.

Beautiful man with beautiful locks :) Question though....would that be considered plate or mail? I am guessing mail. I see that it is attached to leather but it isn't exactly links....so I could be wrong :)

Extreme shrinkage

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

I promise it will grow. My hair was waist length when I started. It shrank and shrank and shrank for the first year. It was between my chin and my shoulders before it stopped. The next year it seemed to just stay the same length. Not a lot of noticeable growth at all..at least not to me. Then all of a sudden it started growing and growing and growing. I have so much hair that it is like a life force of it's own. Please be patient and just let time take care of it. You will not regret it !! Oh and I recommend Biotin. I have been taking it for years.

white (shampoo?) residue stuck in dreads. HELP!?!

Help! Save My Dreads

Could be several things. Is it flaky ? powdery? sticky? Or is it little white dots attached to the ends of the hair strands? If it is the later ...it is your hair bulb. The Hair follicle is a little bulb that is under the skin. It anchors the hair to the skin. The hair follicle is where your hair actually grows from. The white bulb is where the hair was attached to the follicle. The white is where the hair stops producing melanin right before it naturally falls out.

Because we have dreads...our hair is caught into the knots. When we shed hair...it stays in the knots. Most of the shed hair still has the bulb attacked. So especially in dark hair ....the bulb looks like little white dots on and in the dread.

My dreads are covered in these. I have tried everything to get rid of them. But have accepted the fact that they are just part of my dreads.
