would you cut your dreads for a million dollars? (very serious and real question)

General Talk

I'd go as you and see what they offer. Personally I don't like being accountable to others for my basic necessities. I would have to live with the resentment and that would eat me. That said. They have obviously caused you and your sibling(s) some grief and while they don't owe you anything it could be looked at as compensation (think of it as a shallow apology) for that. The real question is what feelings would you be living with by compromising to accept their "apology" wrapped up in money. If you could compromise with an open heart accepting their fallibility and need for control knowing you'd benefit for your own family then it might be worth it. Idk if that helps or not. I don't think accepting money by compromising (unless it was an immoral compromise) makes you any less admirable. It's more about what feelings you have wrapped around it. XxPS I might be able to find a way to accept it...I've never been given the opportunity. :) it's a blessing to have the opportunity even if you turn it down.

Uber dry hair :'(

General Questions

My dreads feel like the desert. I have always had dry hair. But without scalp oils and conditioners it is feeling like it could crackle. I use aloe with jojoba oil. I put it right on my damp hair after washing just to try and trap some moisure in there. That lasts for about a day. After that it just feels like I'm putting oil on top of the hair, but like it's not really moisturizing. :-/ I have switched to the bs/acv. Before dreads I washed every 3days. Now I wash 1xweek. Has anyone put coconut oil on caucasion hair? Anything else?? I'm tempted to use commercial conditioner.

lose hair and the use of wood ash to pull them in

Dreading Methods

Omgoodness I was just talking about this on fb not too long ago. Fricken Velcro! I leaned into our coat closet the other day and got my head totally attached to my husbands arctic work coat. And my car visor gadget storage thing grabs my head if I'm not careful getting in my car. The other beast in my house is this Scandinavian leather chair that has an adjustable neck support. You guessed it, about a 3" wide strip of Velcro across the back. Several times I've been playing with my hair and it has flipped over the back of the chair and when I went to get up I was stuck. Hate Velcro. -_-

i have baking sofa bits in my roots, i need advice

Dread Maintenance

Make sure you dilute it completely before you pour it in your head. Idk about anyone else. But I rinse my hair in the bath. I make sure to rinse my hair before doing other washing (like leg shaving and using bar soap) so I don't get other stuff in my dreads. But I get down under the water with my head and grab onto my dreads and swish water through them. At the roots I grab the dread and swish in and out from the scalp. Then I sit up and rinse with the acv solution. In mine I add a few drops of bergamot Rosemary and lavender. My hair smells great.

Please help!

Help! Save My Dreads

Well. Being able to brush your hair doesn't prevent you from getting them so I would wait until (if) you actually have them to worry about it. If you get them then you and she can debate whether taking your dreads out would be in your best interests. In the mean time keep your hair in a tam whenever you are home. Watch out for the seats in the car if you ride in the same car as your brother. Do NOT keep your coats/hats etc in a communal coat closet. Try and keep all of your stuff in your own room until his lice have been eradicated. Use the tea tree spray as a potential deterrent on your own hair. Good luck!

Naturally occurring dreadlocks a concept difficult to grasp

General Talk

So so so true hippiegal! Whatever feeds the comfort zone, that's pretty much hitting the nail on the head.Baba, I love tattoos too. I'd have one or more if I could commit to something. My taste is sanguine as a butterfly and tends to swing to extremes. The only consistent thing I love is skulls. I love anatomy and I just the shape of them. They have too many cultural ties though. I tried to bribe my husband with a motorcycle into getting one for me ;) That hasn't happened.I am fascinated by the gauges. One of the things I loved about being a nurse (a million years ago) was the equalizing effect a hospital gown has on people. And another thing was an elderly person in a hospital gown. In our culture people fade into the background as they age, or in actuality are pushed there. It's one of the worst things about western culture IMO. I love that we all start out this life looking the same and as we leave it we all look pretty similar as well but in reality there is this vast lifetime of experiences that are waiting to be shared. In a hospital gown you can often see glimpses of a personality you might have missed otherwise. Tattoos are one of those things. Gauged ears will be another. I'm trying to picture a generation of elderly with gauged ears. :) I guess that'll be us. Lol

Naturally occurring dreadlocks a concept difficult to grasp

General Talk

Baba it's interesting that you post your thoughts on this I have been thinking on a variation of this subject for the past several days. I find it curious that there are some extremely strong (sometimes aggressive or condescending) opinions on this site about keeping dreadlocks natural. Natural being equated with being healthiest. I'm totally not questioning that, even though I've read some inaccurate things. But it seems curious to me that those same opinions about the treatment of hair haven't (that I've seen) been voiced about dying/bleaching. Well, certainly not with the same fervor. And if it's all about being healthy, what about the risks of inking skin and puncturing skin and using mind/body altering chemicals. They all have varying degrees of risk and certainly change the body into something different from it's natural state. People could go on all day about food, and I've read some interesting comments about that.

Idk, I have a personal motto of moderation in all things. I love extremes...just on other people :) Well except for the chemical stuff. Since my life has been irrevocably altered in a way I'm not happy about because of someone else's usage, I do have pretty strong feelings about it. But they're feelings I keep mostly to myself for several reasons.

Like I said, it's just felt weird reading some things when others that seem of equal or similar importance go uncommented. Maybe it's just the tone, idk. People are curious things. I'm rambling so I'll quit. :P.PS and I'm not referring to anything you have said, in case you're curious. I love that you are so kind and respectful.

I do the confused stare as well lol. Especially over the washing question. I usually respond with a "huh? What do you mean? I wash it just like before. It's just felted hair. You wash it just like laundry only in the shower. lol!". The look in their faces is usually like "huh, never thought of it like that, I guess so."
