Not that I'm arguing or disagreeing, but just for conversations sake, I think that 'freedom of speech' technically applies to the freedom to speak openly for or against the government without the threat of prosecution, anything else said can be prosecuted for harassment or something or another, you all know how people can be.

I agree! We could also "own it." Personally, I like using "that's so gay!" for anything that is wonderfully fabulous or colorful. Like my drag queen friends, they're so fucking gay! :D Knottysleeves said:
I'm not saying the phrase "that's so gay!" should be banned or legally challenged or anything like that. I don't like censorship.

However, just because a slang phrase was popularized by a bunch of ignorant teens (and vapid pop singers like Katy Perry, ugh), it doesn't mean anyone NEEDS to use it. The English language has literally hundreds of ways to express that something is stupid or you don't like it or think it's silly, etc, without having to use a group's personal identity as a pejorative. Let's get creative. :-)

I actually understand what he's saying. The original meaning to gay was "joy" of somekind. Just like "cool" means a relatively lower tempature. We should stop saying lame to then. Lame was typically a term placed on retarded people. Not that I actually use that term. Not since middle school, but I know more gay people who say it then straight. But I guess that's equivalent to blacks who say "nigga" n -.-

yea it is one thing when a group of people take a traditionally negative word about themselves and turn it into a positive within the group. ie. women calling their close girlfriends friends their "bitches", African American's calling each other "n****"s" and so on. ZuriYAH "Zii" said:

In all honesty, if someone said ewww that smelld dreadlocked... it wouldn't bother me at all.And I'm not defending the term gay meaning stupid, i'm defending the multiple uses of the word gay, just because someone is homosexual, doesn't nessaceraly mean they're gay.And to say the only people defending it are all not gay... I'm actually bi. soaringeagle said:
exactly you are free to prove your ignorance thats a protected right

i wonder how much youd deffend it if dreadlocks or dreads became like saying stinks like eww something smells dreadlocked
would u say its just words and right to use em?.

i notice the only ppl deffending using the term gay meanning stupid are all..not gay
unaffected by the use of the word
but at same time get all upset when a different word with same meanings used "fag" suddenly your offended because then its not used to imply your stupid or lame but actualy homosexual

so its ok for gays to by synominouse woith stupid or lame but not ok for fag to be synonomouse with you..

all speach is protected but some things u say just show how ignorant you are..
nobody is saying u cant say it theyt are just pointing out its you who looks "gay" (in quotes to indicate being used to mean stupide or laME)

IMHO there's a big difference between referring to something negatively like dreads, because you have a choice in the matter(just cut your hair!), and when you're talking about being gay. Being Gay is not a choice and there's nothing wrong with it. Many years ago it was considered a psychological problem that needed treatment. Thankfully we've learned better than that now. But for a lot of kids growing up being gay is still extremely difficult. Using the term to describe something bad instills in them at a young age that there is something wrong with it. I choose not to use the word in that way because I don't want my sons growing up thinking that being gay is an affliction that they need to hide from their parents or anyone else or if one of their friends happens to be gay that it's a problem.

Exactly, I'm suggesting an alternative definition to combat negative usage rather than banning it. There are assholes out there that purposely use specific vocabulary to incite anger. I would rather use the phrase positively and hope it catches on. I know with my friends it has. soaringeagle said:
