By ☮ soaring eagle ॐ, 2011-11-22

since i was young i heard alot about a famouse poet writer great uncle who i got my middle name from i had heard his funeral was much bigger then kenedies but i had the name wrong so searching for his writinmgs returned nothing

however a few years back i uncovered the real name and was surprised to find he terence mscswiney had done the longest hunger strike in irelands history having passed away after 78 days without food

i just now came across this video of his massive funeral

more on hids trial hungerstrike and death

and more he brought the irisg=h struggle to international attention by giving his life for the cause

this is from wiki on his legacy hunger strike and politicle activity

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terence_MacSwiney

MacSwiney's writings in the newspaper irish freedom brought him to the attention of the irish republican brotherhood. He was one of the founders of the Cork Brigade of the irish volunteers in 1913, and was President of the Cork branch of sinn fein . He founded a newspaper, Fianna Fil , in 1914, but it was suppressed after only 11 issues. In April 1916, he was intended to be second in command of the easter rising in Cork and Kerry, but stood down his forces on the order of Eoin MacNeill . Following the rising, he was interned under the defence of the realm act in Reading and Wakefield Gaols until December 1916. In February 1917 he was deported from Ireland and interned in Shrewsbury and Bromyard internment camps until his release in June 1917. It was during his exile in Bromyard that he married Muriel Murphy of the Cork distillery-owning family. In November 1917, he was arrested in Cork for wearing an irish republican army (IRA) uniform, and, inspired by the example of thomas ash, went on a hunger strike for three days prior to his release.

In the 1918 general election, MacSwiney was returned unopposed to the first Dil ireann as Sinn Fin representative for mid cork, succeeding the nationalist MP D. D. Sheehan. After the murder of his friend Toms Mac Curtain, the lord mayor of cork on 20 March 1920, MacSwiney was elected as Lord Mayor. On 12 August 1920, he was arrested in Dublin for possession of sedicious articles and documents, and also possession of a cipher key. He was summarily tried by court marshal on 16 August and sentenced to two years' imprisonment in Brixton Prison.

Hunger strike

In prison he immediately started a hunger strike in protest at his internment and the fact that he was tried by a military court. Eleven republican prisoners in Cork Jail went on hunger strike at the same time. On 26 August, the British cabinet stated that "the release of the Lord Mayor would have disastrous results in Ireland and would probably lead to a mutiny of both military and police in South of Ireland." MacSwiney's hunger strike gained world attention. The British government was threatened with a boycott of British goods by Americans, while four countries in South America appealed to the Pope to intervene. Protests were held in Germany and France as well. An Australian member of Parliament hugh mahon, was expelled from the Australian parliament for "seditious and disloyal utterances at a public meeting" after protesting the actions of the British government in the Australian Parliament.

Attempts at force-feeding MacSwiney were undertaken in the final days of his strike. On 20 October 1920, he fell into a coma and died five days later after 74 days on hunger strike. His body lay in southwork cathederal in London where 30,000 people filed past it. Fearing large-scale demonstrations in Dublin, the authorities diverted his coffin directly to Cork and his funeral there on 31 October attracted huge crowds. Terence MacSwiney is buried in the Republican plot in Saint Finbarr's Cemetery in Cork. arthur griffewth delivered the graveside oration.

Aftermath and legacy

MacSwiney's funeral in Cork on 31 October 1920.

A collection of his writings, entitled Principles of Freedom , was published posthumously in 1921. It was based upon articles MacSwiney contributed to Irish Freedom during 19111912. MacSwiney's life and work had a particular impact in India. Jawaharlal Nehru took inspiration from MacSwiney's example and writings, and Mahatma Gandhi counted him among his influences. Principles of Freedom was translated into various Indian languages including Telugu. Another Indian revolutionary Bhagat Singh was an admirer of Terence MacSwiney and wrote about him in his memoirs. While in prison during his trial he went on hunger strike to protest the conditions in which Indian revolutionaries were being kept. Bhagat Singh, in his interview with the Tribune newspaper mentioned MacSwiney as one of his inspirations. When Bhagat Singh's father petitioned the British government to pardon his son, Bhagat Singh quoted Terence MacSwiney and said "I am confident that my death will do more to smash the British Empire than my release" and told his father to withdraw the petition. He was executed on March 23, 1931, with two of his comrades, Rajguru and Sukhdev, for killing a British officer. Other figures beyond India who counted MacSwiney as an influence include Ho Chi Minh who was working in London at the time of MacSwiney's death and said of him, "A nation that has such citizens will never surrender".

In Ireland, Terence MacSwiney's sister Mary MacSwiney took on his seat in the Dil and spoke against the anglo-irish treaty in January 1922. His brother Sen MacSwiney was also elected in the 1921 elections for another Cork constituency. Sen also opposed the Treaty.

In 1945 his only child, Mire MacSwiney, married Ruair Brugha, son of the anti-Treaty Teachta Dla Cathal Brugha, and later a TD, Member of the European Parliament, and senator. Mire MacSwiney is the author of a memoir History's Daughter: A Memoir from the Only Child of Terence MacSwiney (2006).

A collection relating to Terence MacSwiney exists in Cork Public Museum. His portrait, and a painting of his funeral mass, by Sir John Lavery are exhibited in Cork's Crawford Municipal Art Gallery.

There is also a Secondary School named after him in the north side of Cork City, with a room dedicated to his memory.

i found these videos just now i already knew about the wiki page

occupy the earth

By ☮ soaring eagle ॐ, 2011-10-08

occupy the earth and live free

there are so many "occupy" events happening globally its about time we just occupy our earth as one people united against greed, war, and the "occupying forces" that claim rulership over our lands..we the people occupy this earth in numbers in the billions yet we turn over our power to a handful of greedy individuals well its about time we occupy our planet for ourselves

why do we still expect corporations and governments to rescue us and fix all our problems?

its time we gather together within our communities and find solutions to global problems on local levels

Mitakuye Oyasin

By ☮ soaring eagle ॐ, 2011-09-05

There is a simple but profound Lakota prayer: Mitakuye Oyasin.

These two words mean All My Relations or We are All Related.

To pray this prayer is to petition wankan tonka (great spirit) on behalf of everyone and everything on Earth.

Mitakuye Oyasin honors the sacredness of each person's individual spiritual path, acknowledges the sacredness of all life (human, animal, plant, rock and river.) and creates an energy of awareness which strengthens not only the person who prays but the entire planet.

Soon after I first learned this prayer, I saw that it represented all that needed to be said. It was a prayer of respect, honor and love for all of mankind, and for the Earth. It was a prayer that said "I wish goodness and peace for all. I would leave no one out. I pray for all." It was a prayer that crossed the barriers of religion and could be prayed by one of any faith. It was a prayer that united, instead of dividing. It was an amazing prayer.

There has been a growing awareness, among those of every major faith, of the common elements within religions. Over the next few years, we will see increasing overlaps of creed and ritual as people of every faith sense a need to embrace new ways of relating, outside the structure of their own faith to embrace the Godness in others, regardless of the differences in dogma or religious law. There will be less and less need to convert or convince and more willingness to learn from one another. A combining of traditions, and a reaching out beyond the boundaries of divided faith, will result in a focus on common truth, tolerance, acceptance, and Oneness.

In todays society too many feel alone or only connected to a small group or family, but in reality all things are connected all things are one and related, you lose your sense of being alone and separate in the world when you feel connected and related to everything and everyone, the air you breathe the water you bathe in the birds singing in the trees all are brothers sisters in fact one with you a part of you.

There is a great awakening taking place. more and more people are realizing the interconnection of all things. for some this takes on profound meaning as they feel at one with all that is, for others its more the fact they start to realize the effect they have on the earth and peoples so far away.

Critical Mass has been reached. The hundredth monkey has rinsed his food, and a new core knowledge of Oneness is being born. Aho. Mitakuye Oyasin.

dreadlocks journey

By ☮ soaring eagle ॐ, 2011-08-24

all my life i was just a hair

but somehow i knew i would get there

i was always so straight so fine

perfectly combed into a straight line

along came a breeze and blew me here and there

but for once i was left where i fell without a care

ive always been pushed back out of face forced into place

but now i can go wild be free to knot at my own pace its not a race

i wrap around my neighbour and rub up against her oh wow this feels great

we tighten our grasp tighter and tighter i think i found my mate

but alas our mairiage is not our fate we come apart and feel a loss

but another has come to wrap and carress with a careless head toss

this time the bonds hold our union fortold

shafts penetrating loops pulling eachother in tight

its love that pulls us together not force or might

others gather round us uniting together

th sun the wind the rain the weather

its nature that holds this family together

its kinda funny to me when ppl say they don't have the patience to go natural when growing dreads cause very often it takes no patience at all

recently many freinds started growing natural dreads, and nearly all of them were amazed by how fast the hair dreaded naturaly, some found dreads by day 4, others by day 7 and a few by day 14

and yea i said day..not week..not month

every 1 of them was excited every day by the changes they saw.. it wasnt any agonizing waiting game, no it was constantly being surprised by the constant evolution on their heads.

its kinda funny to me that they dont have the patience to just let things happen, but they do have the patience to have their hair pulled for 9 hours straight, then to work on them 4 hours a day every day month after month..

makes me wonder how they would feel if they only tried doing nothing a few weeks

when it comes to dreads and whats concidered neat and tidy theres many schools of thought , usualy this just means a nice style clean healthy no congos the thickness of your leg

just a nice look, however locticians and dread salonbs push this idea on you that to be neat and tidy you need to spend thousands on maintenance and constant upkeep

so lets look at a lil bit of these lies they tell you

lie loose hairs look messy

fact dreads are loose hairs alowed to dread most ppl who dont find dreads attractive find the dreads not the loose hairs messy.

lie dreads roots need to be constantly tightened to appear "neat and tidy"

fact dreads roots tighten themselves but need some looseness at the roots to move, be comfortable, and dread properly, tighten the roots too much and no dreading can occur, you replace dreading with weaker interlocks, or twisting or weaving with crochet. these methods can weaken the dread causing them to break off, additionaly pulling the hair in too tightly at the roots can even cause baldness, a condition called traction alopecia is caused by constant tension on the roots, its responsible for record numbers of 19 year olds getting hair transplants. Roots should have a gap under thenm that you can fit a finger under, ewhen dreads are young this gap will be much larger up to 3 inches but that does not indicate a problem, its just how they dread., the roots also should have loose hairs (in african hair that mini afro in others the scalp fuzz) this is normal and healthy protecting the scalp from sun damage, andthese hairs will dread on their own when long enough or join an eisting dread, however as you seperate dreads to prevent congos more will form.

lie dreads shouldnt be "fuzzy" o the body of the dreads

fact again dreads are loose hair they will have some sticking out too short to dreasd in its not noticiable and its not worth worrying about anything you do to control that like wax or crochert is devastating to dreads (african hairs tight curls will result in naturally smoother dreads)

lie dreads should be smooth straight and perfectly round

factdreads should vary in shape size and especially texture the effort needed to create smoothe round straight dreads is excessive and can cause minotr to severe damage (palm rolling minor- crocheting extreme) this also removes the natural personality turning an exciting natural style into a boring manufactured one.

lie dreads tips should be blunted

fact african hair blunts naturally due to he tight curls, other types might or might not.

however theres advantages and disadvantages to each, the advantages only pertsain to african type hair which does not produce oils, and culturally they come from hot climates so water and moidsture retention is a genetic advantage. other hair types will mold if they stay damp for days blunted dreads tips make the dreads dry 5 times slower on average.

short term neat and tidy vs long term dammage

salons and locticians are a bold bunch they will walk right uop to you on the street and start elling you how ugly your dreads are and how they can "fix them for you"

they will make you feel self consouse about every hair every bump every loop and try o convince yu you need their services or you'll never dread

so now your ashamed buying into the "only neat and tidy dreads are acceptable" lie (and starting to fear your going to get fired or never meet your lover cause after all your hairs so shamefull) you concent to get your dreads "worked on"

8 hours pulling your hair coating in wax poking holes in them shoving them through the roots rolling rubbing tying weaving gluing and who knows what else you walk out looking "neat and tidy" (at least to the untrained eye) your scalps in agony your dreads are stiff and unmoving and your wallets short several hundred dollars (2 months dread maintenace could pay for a used car)

now youve got scheduled appointments to come back month after month year after year

but how long till you wake up with a dread deached laying on your pillow?

or till the wax grosses you put so much you shave them off?

or til the expence and the work involved makes you think dreads arent worth the hassles?

some people have spent 14-18 thousand on their dreads only to have them so mangled they start to fall off

but then you see people who never do a thing and their dreads last 40 years and grow 20 feet long

and strong

dont fall into the trap

save your money

save your dreads
