is it normal for 1 month old backcombed dreads to not look like dreads?

Dread Maintenance

Mine are about 5 months old at the moment and nobody notices that I have dreadlocks, they're locking up nicely but unless I tell people they don't even think that I have dreadlocks, and when they find out they tell me it doesn't look as if I do at all. I usually get them to feel them after that and then they actually believe me, but I think it's because my hair isn't really long, so the back is just whispy ends, I just want my hair to grow faster, it's only grown a couple of inches over the past few months.

How to make dreads go back

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

Mine can go back if I train them that way after a shower, or wear a hat and don't move around too much and they're like 8" long at the front.

General Talk

The top of my hair was an inch or two longer than my sides when I started my dreads and they're turning out fine.

Bunched ends

Dread Maintenance

The dreads down the back of my head curl up on their own ends, and theres a few of them zig zag type dealy's happening too but they're a bit smaller, probably because my hair is only like 7" long back there.

Curly Dreads? (picture included)

Dread Maintenance

Mine do the same thing, it's almost all ringlets at the back. But I've noticed that some of the more dreaded locks end up being a lot straighter, and only end up curling at the tips. Chucking some beads on there might weigh them down a bit so they don't curl as much though I guess.

Thank you all for your replies, its so reassuring to know that theres members here that have dreads with similar traits :) Not that I don't like them, but are there any herbs or treatments that would perhaps discourage the curl a bit? I know I should just let them do their thing, but I was hoping to get rid of my bothersome curl with the dreads hehe. Anyway thanks again all!

Dread bangs - Difficulty locking...

Dread Maintenance

I'm in the same boat as Shanxon, my bangs are the most dreaded parts of my head so far. I don't usually wear anything on my head though, and most of the dreads at the back of my head have just turned into ringlets.

Do I wash too much?

Dread Maintenance

So it's been about two and a half weeks since I first had my hair backcombed, and I wash my hair every second day with a baking soda/acv rinse(which I did before I started my dread journey also), and I was just wondering if this is detrimental to the locking process? It's summer here and I workout near everyday so if I don't clean my hair after a few days I start to smell it.I'll also be headed to Thailand in a week so I'm sure the humidity there is going to make me sweat like a demon.

Hey there people

Introduce Yourself

I wish I lived anywhere near the ocean, but the beach is about 2 hours away I think. I'll be in Thailand for a little over a month in a couple of weeks though, so I can take a few well needed dips on the sandy Phuket beaches.

Hey there people

Introduce Yourself

Hi everyone, I've been lurking these forums for about a month now trying to get all the best information I could about my first dread journey. I had them loosely backcombed a week ago and they seem to be holding up alright, the usual warm Australian spring/summer has seemed to disappear this past week so it's taking them a little longer to dry.Anywho I just wanted to introduce myself a little bit and I can't wait till my my dreads are locked up tight and have grown nice and long like many of yours on here.
