Which came first, the hippie or the dread?

General Talk

I love having a good shower.... Even if I'm not washing my hair or using any soap or anything......... I just love the daily ritual of standing in a lovely warm shower, especially when i'm hungover..... Like now :P Plus i believe the drying process helps my baby dreads knot up some more......... I think Maxe might be on to something there.... I personally have never been particularly girly and I own bugger all beauty products/moisturisers etc etc etc, and even if I do buy them I use em a couple of times and forget about them..... I've never done any kind of pampering regime to the horror of my mum and sister lol...... And I'm 26 and people allways think I'm around 19.... I get ID'd loads and I LOVE it :)

baking soda and ACV mix.... not working?

Dread Products

So I've been dreading for about 2 weeks now, natural and twist n rip mix, and have tried the BS, ACV mix a couple of times..... Im doing 3rd of a cup BS, with 3 drops of tea tree oil in a big stew pot, pouring it on my head, leaving it 10 min to soak in a towel before rinsing it with ACV.However my hair is still coming out greasy afterwards and I've had to resort to shampoo on a couple of occasions. I'm trying to cut down the amount I wash my hair to every 3 days or so, but it's very hard cos I'm a right oily bugger! But yeah, why is it not working??? What am I doing wrong?

Roots?

Dread Maintenance

Lol I'm not finding it stressful at all myself. Not having to tear a brush through the dreads that form in the night any more is well liberating I tell thee........ and it gives the big messy look i always craved but could never achieve due to my total failure to keep up with hair appointments....... :P

lice prevention

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

In Germany apparently its been banned as a crop pesticide due to links with declining bee populations, although studies have remained inconclusive. It acts on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors by preventing the degradation of acetylcholinesterase, which is an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter.Bacically, the neurotransmitter makes your nerves fire and things happen by way of jumping accross the synaptic gaps and continuing the action potential along the nerve. However, that action potential is stopped by an enzyme (acetylcholinesterase ) breaking down that neurotransmitter. If a chemical gets on to these receptors and stops the enzyme working, then its bad times really! It means the nerves cannot stop firing, so you get uncontrollable twitches, convulsions... you may have seisures and death will follow from paralysis of the respiratory system most likely. And thats if you're a lil bug.Apparently bugs have more of that kind of receptor than do ourselves, hence why it works so well.its supposed to be pretty safe for human and animal use, but I personally would not wanna put something that does that on my head! Since I learnt about the nervous system and neurotoxins in a module of my degree, I have looked on even fly spray with great wariness......its

soap free and clean as can be

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Hmm, now I have the opposite problem...I have never experienced dry or flaky skin or chapped lips and there ain't no soap on this planet that ever dries me out cos I am about the greasiest person in the world! On the upside at 26 I still get ID'd for booze and I haven't got any wrinkles :)...... on the downside, only a few hours after a shower I feel dead greasy and I can't really go for more than a couple of days without washin my hair. I have been trying to cut it down since dreading, but it doesn't seem to be responding..... I can't REALLY put it down to oil over compensation either on my face and body, cos I'm not really a clean freak and I only tend to really use water and scrubbing on my body and face.

make up

General Talk

Wow so many replies! I personally love my make up. I've never been a slave to it, and am not bothered about living my day to day life with out it, plus I work as a ranger, and make up would end up all over my face lol..... However come the parties of friday and saturday night it's dress up time!..... without being cliched, I kinda treat clothes and make up like art... i love finding unique things.... vibrant colours and beautiful patterns.... same with make up........ I'm not into spending ridiculous amounts of money... my sis will spend 20 on one mascara whereas I'm happy spending 99p lol, and then i like to mix colours in all kinda of funky ways and get myself looking somewhat like a parrot! :P One of the many reasons i wanted dreads was because I am rubbish at styling hair and keeping up with hair appointments, so i could never make my head look as dramatic as my eyes unless i was with my gay hairdresser buddy.... I liked the idea of having a low maintenance and beautiful style that had loads of volume and that I could put up in funky ways without drowning in hairspray...... and of course decorate with beads and such like,,,,,So yeah, make up I feel should be a form of self expression.... it should never be a form of slavery. I feel bad for my mum and sister who are both kinda like that.... can't leave the house without make up and hair done perfectly has to be all the best top notch products....... probably wouldn't dare to wear something particularly daring due to risk of ridicule... and will only wear boring browns and smoky colours, as make up for them is about "making you look prettier and defining your features"..... where for me its all about being like a parrot lol:)

make up

General Talk

Something I've observed, is that very few women with dreads seem to bother to wear make up........yet with the individuality, and the volume and the wildness... never mind the decoration, they never look plain, and they look far more beautiful than most people i ever see with well groomed hair do's and a style of polished perfection....perhaps dreads convey an sense of inner confidence? Put you more in touch with yourself?Any thoughts?

My natural journey towards dreadiness :)

Member Journals and Timelines

By the way guys, as I haven't updated for a while guys, I'm now at 8 months. The flat parts are starting to round off and many of the loops are hardening into wee bumps. New loops are coming all the time but that's cool. Some are fattening up and migrating up the side of my face! They seem to be going into the start of a reet ol shrinkage phase! As we know natural dreads will have that birds nest look for about a year before starting to mature and will be free of wax and goo. And of course, the freedom of no dread maintenance as well. Have no close up pics but here's a few.

My natural journey towards dreadiness :)

Member Journals and Timelines

And three months in now and I think things are going pretty gloriously. I am loving it. The roots have all locked up really well, and I've got all sorts of weird shapes and loops lol. People are saying to me "wow cool dreads!" now instead of "um.... are you dreading your hair or something?" I've had no issues with them at all. Which is mostly thanks to listening to everyone on this site. And I'm loving decorating them. I look a bit like a sweet shop there's that many beads in there :P

I'm well chuffed with it all.
