Week 1, few questions

General Questions

Loops are good...leave them alone! You want loops! That is the beginning of a dread! The less you touch the better because you can undo them very easily at this stage. The BS wash is good....but i would not wet them down every day. Even Water pressure can unknot your hair. The salt water will help a lot. Put a couple table spoons of sea salt into a spray bottle then fill it up with water. Spray your hair with it several hours before you wash it. Keep the salt water off your scalp. It will dry it out...causing it to be itchy and flaky. But it does help lock up dreads! Sounds like you have a good start!

Help my dreads are far away from healthy natural dreads...

Help! Save My Dreads

I would not cut my dreads. I did not crochet my hair I didn't even know that people would do that until i joined this site. I have never even felt crocheted dreads. So i can't give personal experience on the subject. If they were only a few months old i would suggest to comb them out and start again. Your dreads are around 8 months old. I would try conditioner...it may loosen them up some. I do know that recovery is gonna take some time. I definitely would try to recover before I cut anything. My hair is thin and fine. I only have around 26 mature dreads and new ones popping up. My dreads are not real fat...they are just kinda medium sized.

ASAP>>>HELP ...Um so I haven't been doing as good of a job as I thought!!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

When our scalp gets dirty we can't brush the natural build up of skin cells and oil off....so it can kinda sit there. When you add water and soap....it turns to a creamy greasy substance. All you need to do is to concentrate on cleaning your scalp better when you wash and rinsing it really well.

Feeling Discouraged

Introduce Yourself

It IS part of the natural process. You are right playing with your baby dreads can undo what time is trying to form. Dreads go through an ugly duckling stage for many many months. In a year your hair will look like dreads. Just be patient they will tighten and straighten on their own. Embrace the loose hair. We all have some. It makes dreads unique. I personally love the little loose curls. Relax ....all you have to do is wash it and separate the little hairs that try to connect the dreads.

Bad dreads.

Dreading Methods

your babies are only a month old. Time and patience form dreads. keep hands off...the more you touch right now...the more the knots come out. Your babies are going to be loose for a while. Hair knots up loosens up and knots up again for about a year. Wearing a wool tam helps form knots. Spraying a sea salt mixture on your hair an hour or so before you wash it helps. Make sure you are using a residue free shampoo that does not contain any conditioner. Be very gentle when you wash...don't undo knots. Using BS rinses followed by ACV rinses instead of shampoo will clean without actual scrubbing. Good Luck and enjoy the ride :)

General Talk

Truth is for the first year and sometimes longer dreads form. They go through periods of looking kinda crazy. I do not use anything in my dreads. I shampoo or use bs and acv every other time. I don't use any other product on mine. I did back combing on some t and r on some....braided a few and a couple on the nape of my neck were neglect. The first few months were messy. at about 6 months i could feel a difference that made me happy. I have had mine 2 years...and they are just now looking like mature dreads. Dreads are a journey...not a walk out to the mail box. They take time and patience. My advice...lol ....don't look in a mirror for a year :)
