First week?

General Questions

you sectioned your hair and did t and r right? ok so right now you kinda have an outline for dreads. They are not dreads yet. There are no real knots yet. For the next year....your hair is gonna form knots. Those knots turn into dreads. They are gonna go thru a process of loosening up so they can knot up ..then loosen then knot. They are gonna form loops and weird bumps. Each dread is unique..no 2 are exactly alike.Noone has really covered week one cause nothing really happens yet. Loosening is normal, expected and wanted. :)Wash your hair...but wash gently. Concentrate on washing your scalp not your hair. Otherwise, Don't touch your hair. Don't play with it. It can undo the knots that are trying to form. Sleeping on wool or wearing wool tams a few hours a day can encourage knots. Spraying your hair with a mixture of sea salt and water an hour or so before you wash it can also encourage knots. You don't need to worry about anything the first week. Sit back and enjoy this new journey!

How many...

Dreading Methods

if you only have 18 dreads....they are gonna be big fatties. The best way to judge mature thickness is on how big the sections are. The dread will mature to be aproximately the size of the section. Most ppl section off 1" or smaller. If your sections are bigger you might wanna think about redoing them.

It has a little to do with your hair thickness and texture .

My hair is really thin and really fine...so my dreads will always be a tad bit smaller than my sections. My hair was about the thickness of a dime when in a pony tail before i dreaded it. Now each of my dreads are as thick as a dime! I have about 30 dreads.

Most dreads will shrink up and fatten up a whole lot during the first year. So you can't judge the mature size by looking at a baby dread

upsetting news

Introduce Yourself

I am sorry.

where do you work?

do you have a written copy of the dress code? What does it say about hair? anything specific?

If you start them out with neglect....they may not notice it happening.

Can you wear a tam or wrap your head in a scarf at work? You might be able to hide dreads for a while.

Or you can start looking for another job :)

If having dreads is important to you...I am sure you will find a way!

Good Luck!

single minded people not understanding my dreads :/

Life Issues Facing Dreads

people can be mean. Are you still in high school? high school is the worst...everyone thinks you should be a clone. I think it is wonderful that you are confident in yourself and are willing to "express your individuality." The people giving you a hard time have never had dreads. They have no idea what dreads are truely about. When my dreads were babies a friend said to me...."i have seen a lot of nice dreads and your dreads just don't look right". The point is that he had seen dreads but never experienced them. He was comparing my dreads to mature dreads. he moved out west and I had not seen him in a while. he flew in and stayed with me during the holidays. First thing he said to me was "wow, nice dreads."Don't let people at school influence your journey. Rock those dreads! and enjoy the ride!!!!!
