11 inches long, curls, residue free shampoo. neglect. need some help

Introduce Yourself

Mia remember the volcanoes you made in elementary school? that was BS and ACV mixed. I use it to unclog my sinks. It causes a chemical reaction when mixed. You don't wanna put it in your hair like that.

Should I be worried or will this go away when they mature :/

Dread Maintenance

don't worry! Your dreads are just sweet little babies! As they mature they will hang down straighter, covering a lot of the areas. Plus you will have new hair growth to fill in the lines. People worry about the loose hair (new hair growth) for no reason. It actually fills in your little gaps and makes your dreads even more beautiful!

Relax your baby dreads are looking good!

Dying my dreads

Introduce Yourself

I don't know anything about coloring dreads. But i am curious about the sections on your head. You said you have 4 dreads in the back? How many dreads do you have in total? How big are your sections? The biggest you would need is about 1 " sections.

a little worried about my locks after discovering this site, eek!!

Help! Save My Dreads

Please don't crochet the loose hair into the thin roots. It will break hairs in your dread and thin it even more. Crocheting your dreads is very damaging. If you can't get a bead up that high, try tying a cotton or hemp string around it instead. Rubber bands are not good, they will break off hair too, you are wanting to strengthen the thin roots not weaken them.

has anyone seen this video? (crazy salt lady and Johnny clean cut & exchange dreads)

Dread Products

when the dread is cut and the bead is removed...there is no dreaded hair under the bead..it was straight hair. Obviously the bead had been there for a long time, so the hair under the bead was not waxed to begin with. Wax would not go through a bead.

I agree. Knots are not gonna form easily in oily hair. It is best to wash it at least once a week. More if your hair is really oily or dirty.

Loose hair is expected. My loose hair starts to knot up when it reaches about 10" in length. I have about 3 or 4 babies at all times. They eventually get eaten by the mature dreads. If the loose hair does not dread on it's own...you could try gentle t and r.

As for the dreads thinning.....pictures would help alot. Maybe gather some of the loose hair and secure it to the thinner dread with a bead to encourage it to dread together?

Baby dreads aren't even dreads anymore

Help! Save My Dreads

do you play with your hair? One of the hardest things to do is to keep fingers away from baby dreads. They are new and exciting. People wanna touch them to see what is happening on their head, or to make sure that they are still there. Touching your hair through out the day can actually undo your baby knots. Especially if you are running your fingers thru your hair. Sit on your hands or learn to knit, anything to keep your hands off your head and out of your hair.

BC.... and wax....

Introduce Yourself

Most of my dreads were back combed. There is nothing wrong with it as long as it is done gently. It will cause some damage, but if done gently it is only mild damage. Now wax on the other hand is bad. This site is dedicated to the big no wax policy. You won't get pro wax advice here. I am sorry. It is like a child wanting to put a fork in an electrical outlet. You don't give the child instructions on how to do it. You stop the child from doing it because you know it is harmful.

Same thing with wax....even a little is bad. Don't use any wax. Research wax on this site. There are horror stories! and it is just gross. I put some on my finger once...it felt nasty. Can't even imagine how nasty it would feel in my hair.

A few questions before I dread

General Questions

neglect is basically throwing the comb and brush away. Hair will naturally knot up and form dreads on it's own if not brushed or combed. It is the healthiest way to dread. All you have to do is pull the sections apart to keep it from being one big knot.

Back combing and twist and rip methods work well. But remember to be gentle if you use one of these methods.

with you having to brush your hair a couple of times a day..it sounds like your hair is begging to be dreaded.

Dreadlocks are not made by letting your hair be nasty and dirty.Oily, dirty hair does not dread easy. You want your hair to be clean. Clean hair makes healthy dreads. You can use shampoo on your hair but nothing that leaves residues.

Read the section on here called dreaducation. It has lots of information that will help you.

Good luck with whatever method you choose.

How many...

Dreading Methods

you can section it yourself instead of having to pay someone to do it. Or have a friend help. But if you have it sectioned in the salon...don't let em talk you into doing anything else. They will probably try to make you feel like they know more than you do and would do a better job than you would. Don't listen. By researching here you know as much and more than they do.

Good Luck with it!! and keep us posted!
