Congo Crazy!

General Questions

getting them wet won't hurt them ....but it is very important not to pull them up into a pony tail when they are wet. They need to be dry. Don't go to bed with them wet. It encourages mold and mildew to grow inside your dreads. Which can actually cause your hair to rot....and mildew stinks too. Baby dreads aren't as likely to get mold or mildew as mature dreads are but it is still possible.

starting my natural dreads

Introduce Yourself

All your father asked was for you to wait til Christmas. He is even gonna get you residue free shampoo to do it with. A month is only 30 days....no big deal. And you can start your journey fresh on the New Year!!! Sounds like a plan to me. Dad will be happy , you will be happy ....sounds like a win win situation to me:)I have an aunt that loves me very much....and would never ever hurt me.....but she teases me. She doesn't love my hair but she does love me. Yesterday after the family Thanksgiving meal she pulled at a dread and said "so when are you gonna cut these off?" I replied "Never ,gonna keep em forever." She laughed and said "one of these days I am gonna catch you asleep." She was teasing...she would never ever do something like that. But when she said that it made me think of this post.I don't know him but your father was probably doing the same...just teasing.

Conditioner

General Questions

even at a year conditioner can loosen your knots some. If your hair isn't really dry and needing the conditioner don't use it. A lot of residue is left on hair which can attract yucky stuff. I put 2 or 3 drops of oil and a cap full of acv into a (clean) 2 gallon milk jug fill it up with water ....shake it up and then poor it over my hair...i let it set for a couple minutes...then rinse it out with clear water. The vinager smell does not stay ....but the smell of the essential oil does. I have people tell me all the time that my hair smells nice.

I am in the process of getting dreadlocks. Why do I feel like a fake?

General Talk

you are rediscovering you! That is a beautiful thing. The real you is not a fake. You were just a dready mama inside waiting for the moment to shine :) Embrace it and stop worrying about what others think. If you are happier in the new self/true self then i don't see an issue at all :)

mineral oil

General Questions

actually mineral oil is one of the worst things to put on your skin. It bonds with your natural oil and through out the day when it is rubbed off on clothes or chairs or washed off it takes all your natural oil with it. So it is really oily (yuck) but leaves your skin dryer than it was to begin with.. It tricks you into thinking it is moisturized. Which makes you wanna do it again....skin dries out. so you put more on ...vicious cycle.

lice in dreads, help!!!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

all it takes to catch head lice is to hug someone that has head lice...or to put your coat on a hook with someone with head lice or to sit in a cloth chair that someone with head lice has sat in. Putting on a hat or sleeping on a pillow that someone with head lice worn or slept on. Children are the most likely to spread it. If you have lived in a house with other people and have head lice for at least a week....chances are everyone in the household has it. If you kill the lice on your head and the house is not treated and the household members are not treated you are just gonna get them back.

lice in dreads, help!!!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

you can't just get rid of them that way......you have to check everyone in the household.....they could have lice too and give it right back.....furniture has to be treated....carpets vaccumed( bags thrown outside in the garbage after) sheets clothes blankets .....everything washed and dried in a hot dryer....anything cloth (like stuffed animals)that can't be washed needs to be put into plastic bags ...tightly sealed and put away for 30 days. if you don't you are just gonna catch them again.

Using honey as bad as wax?

Introduce Yourself

i have real straight fine hair....so my personal experience is gonna be different than yours. I highly suggest looking at Dreadlockedlady's pictures. She has beautiful dreads. and her texture is more like yours. It can give you a visual idea of what your dreads can look like over time. Don't put time limits on your dreads. Dreads kinda happen at their own pace.

Using honey as bad as wax?

Introduce Yourself

dreads form by hair rubbing around and knotting with other hair...honey would keep that from happening. honey would wash out but wax doesn't.but still sticky hair doesn't mean dreads. Dreads don't happen over night. There is no way you could have healthy mature dreads in a month and a half. If you mean by "nappy"... that you have african curly kinky hair ...then your hair is gonna dread way faster than straight fine hair!!!!! You said you recently cut it all off...is there enough hair left to dread?
