Is there a "proper" way to seperate dreads?

Dread Maintenance

I'd like to know, too. I've basically more or less stopped separating altogether because I don't like the sound. I'm a month and a half in.

Seperate, seperate, seperate

Dread Maintenance

thanks for posting this, i'll be hitting the two month mark in a couple of weeks and i've had such a hard time with separating, you have no idea. it's taken so much to not completely freak out and i've thought of combing out so many times.i think i'll have to grab that bottle of olive oil and ask a friend to give me a hand before i lose my mind trying to do it myself... you gave me a great visual though, thanks!

Dreading Methods

Good! That's what I was hoping for, thanks :) Shuk Coot said:

Thick(er) dreads with T&R?

Dreading Methods

A friend of mine is considering getting a couple of dreadlocks underneath his hair once it gets a bit longer, and since backcombing is a waste of time, I was thinking about T&R (he wants me to help him). But all the T&R i've seen has been relatively thin. Is there a way to achieve thicker dreads with T&R, or should I do the few thin ones and hope they get thicker as time passes?

Brand New/DreadMe up

Introduce Yourself

I agree, loops are a sign that your hair is dreading, and therefore a good thing. It's actual proof that your hair is doing something. soaringeagle said:
nonono what? dont cut ! and loops are a good thing
youtubers are idiots and the worse place for dread info

With your hair length be cautious of the term "neglect".If you throw out your comb at this hair length and stop using conditioners after shampooing and seriously "neglect" your hair within months the loops and bumps you acquire may be very shocking to you,(most all youtubers that went neglect at your length have cut their hair). My advice would be to keep sections at about a pencil width. That way it is not so noticeable and you can still ponytail your hair back if needed on the "bad hair days".You can let them combine down the road.My other suggestion would be to cut your "thin white girl hair" as you say a few inches so the loops are not so extreme and you will gain experience along the way.

if its already matted to the scalp wiggle a finger under a few hairs and pull upwards
a lil olive oil wiped or sprayed just on the hairs u need to get loose will help and doing it when wet helps too

Backcombed or natural?

Dreading Methods

The backcombing has basically all fallen out, which I expected. I think somehow I thought it would be faster? Now I don't really care about the time.A big problem I'm experiencing is that I'd finding near impossible to rip sections apart close to my head because they're all matted in real good. I don't know if it's because of backcombing or if I'd have this problem if I had gone natural from the beginning. Or if I just waited too long to start sectioning. (How soon do you start that stuff anyways?)I don't care where the sections go or how big/small they end up being, as long as my whole head isn't one dreadlock.

Backcombed or natural?

Dreading Methods

Two weeks ago, I backcombed my hair, and, now, obviously, it's really messy. I'm sort of ok with the messiness (meaning I know it's going to get better with time), but I also sort of regret backcombing because after I did, I learned a lot more about dreading naturally, and kind of want that instead.I'm not bothered by the time it takes to grow dreads, I'll get there anyway, so either method works, but I'm confused about the principle of it, if that makes sense. This really should be an easy decision, but I'm naturally indecisive. Thoughts?
