Dreads and the "man..."

General Talk

Because it's not part of what the media classes as 'beautiful' or 'acceptable'.The views in which people hold dreads can be quite shocking. Hopefully one day people will open their eyes and see them to be the beautiful thing that they are, like everyone in the community does (:

HELP...dont want to cut...but...

Help! Save My Dreads

Exactly. Time and patience. It's a beautiful journey. You just have to let go. Most of the bumps will tighten into your dreads, but ask anyone on here, the dreads with the loops and bumps will end up being your favourites

Help! Save My Dreads

Im confused as to how people are picking up that you've used crocheting when you pointed out that you've done no maintenance apart from separating before the hair congos. There will always be a small amount of loose hair at the roots, but it will dread as it grows and slowly become less and less. Flyaway hairs are also common, but you notice them more than anyone because you look at them closer. A nifty wee trick to tame them is to take a towel and lightly rub it over your dreads in a downward motion to smooth them out without harming or breaking any hairs. It helps neaten the look of your dreads if your going out or they are annoying you so much that you want to chop them

Dreads & racism

Life Issues Facing Dreads

It is complete double standards. It's also like people commenting on how skinny someone is. Poking fun at them. It would be completely unacceptable if that was an overweight person so why is it alright when it's an underweight person?Dreadlocks are not just for one ethnicity, just like they are not for one religion.

It's called a double standard. A lot of people do it in one form or the other. It's just the way our society functions. Example I have very pale skin almost albino, my face is reddish sometime but the rest of me is very white, I have a very low tolerance to the sun ( I have no tan lines :)). A lot of people think it's "okay" to make negative comments on my paleness because it is unusual but if I would make a comment on the darkness of someones skin it would not be tolerated. It's all about labels and what is accepted as 'normal'. I like your ravioli analogy.

Dreading Methods

It's unbelieveable the things people will put in their hair to 'create' dreads when all they have to do is let nature take it's course.Clean hair and no comb makes beautiful, unique dreads so why destroy your hair by using something as stupid as coca cola? I mean, do these people not realise that it contains stuff that they use to preserve dead bodies? It's shocking. As for the smoke, I'm a smoker myself so I deal with the smell all the time. I find that the best method to get rid of it is spraying your hair with teatree oil or anything else along those lines that you like the smell of. It doesn't mask the smell, it actually removes it and means you don't have to keep washing your hair to remove it

Introduce Yourself

Me too. It's the one thing I've used that has left my dreads feeling truly clean and soft. And since using them my hair has become alot healthier (: Wild Roots said:
Me too...I find the baking soda and acv rinse to work really well with my hair. It's kept my babies feeling clean and soft which really shocked me. Although I do need to find some natural oils for the times when my scalp looks a little dry, which isnt often...

My hair is bleached and dyed. And it was dyed before I bleached. I'd rather have healthy locs that take longer to form.

Welcome Wild Roots and congrats on product free hair! I joined: dreads saved by dreadlockssite.com group for the same reasons. Without this site I probably would have succumbed to wax products or crocheting.

Btw, your baby dreads look fantastic!

@firechild - no wonder you have to retwist if you use conditioner. Natural womyn gave an excellent tip when using acv as a conditioner. put the rinse in a squirt bottle, so that way it can be aimed at the scalp. better than putting conditioner over everything and having more twists than necessary fall out. It's also a fact that less twisting = less damage. SE may be blunt, but he's just looking out. happy dreading :)
