I figured that I've been lurking on the site long enough and that it was time to join the community. I'm a fairly new and proud dreadie hailing from good ol Michigan! I've been letting my hair lock for about 2 months now and it's been a really awesome and exciting experience so far. Before I started my dreadlock journey, like many others, the only websites that I came across were those that promoted wax and people were suggesting that I go to a salon to start them. Originally I thought that I'd have to have someone start them for me. Fortunately late one night, I randomly decided to research some more and came across this website. I read as much as I could and was happy to learn that all I needed to start journey was with my own two hands and patience. So the minute I finished reading a lot of info from initial dreading methods to washing methods, I started two strand twisting (I have very coily afro textured hair) my hair right there on my couch with just my hands. It took a quite a while (24 hours!) but when I finished I felt pretty stoked and accomplished. I'm so happy that I was saved by the website and very informative info and advice of members and avoided wax and other harmful products. Right now I use a baking soda and acv wash and rinse whenever my scalp starts to itch (or just a quick water rinse when I'm in a rush...it temporarily eases the itchiness) and I have used a little organic twist gel twice to lightly tidy up a little for special occasions but I very much prefer the messiness and craziness of it all. Other than that nothing else has touched my hair. I just let my hair be...frizz, loose hairs, wild roots and all

Thanks SE! So glad that I avoided that pitfall especially since I don't have cash to blow like that. It pains me to think that people spend that kind of money to get something that should be free. I feel like you all should do one of those Mastercard commercials when it comes to dreading haha...Getting a dreadhead starter kit- $15Going to a Salon -$300+just letting nature, time and patience take care of it all for you - priceless

Welcome Wild Roots and congrats on product free hair! I joined: dreads saved by dreadlockssite.com group for the same reasons. Without this site I probably would have succumbed to wax products or crocheting.Btw, your baby dreads look fantastic!@firechild - no wonder you have to retwist if you use conditioner. Natural womyn gave an excellent tip when using acv as a conditioner. put the rinse in a squirt bottle, so that way it can be aimed at the scalp. better than putting conditioner over everything and having more twists than necessary fall out. It's also a fact that less twisting = less damage. SE may be blunt, but he's just looking out. happy dreading

@SE - I may just have to make one @firechild - I find the ors twist gel to be okay when i used very little of it. It works pretty well at taming the frizz, it holds the hair pretty tight and it doesn't flake while keeping the hair feeling relatively soft (if you don't use an excessive amount otherwise your hair will feel really stiff...ugh). Personally, I really prefer not using it because i feel that it doesn't allow my hair to be free the way that I want it to be so that's why I seldom use it. But I do agree with SE when it comes to retwisting. I tried retwisting once or twice and it was just a nuisance to me (don't like the way it gunks up my hands lol) and i really don't understand how it helps with dreading other than to keep a neat looking head..I very much prefer the chaos . If I didn't have anymore I most likely wouldn't buy any more gel or retwist but that's just me. But if you're set on trying different gels and retwisting I'd recommend the ors twist gel, it smells pretty nice and its pretty inexpensive.@MzElaineous - Thank you and congrats on avoiding the waxy mess. We sure did get lucky! I'm very happy about the way my baby dreadies are growing and your babies are looking mighty fine themselves

It'll be great to watch them as they progress@Firechild: everyone has there opinions, but there is no need to be rude when they are offered. SE knows more than most when it comes to dreading hair and is just looking out for everyone so they can have the healthiest, most beautiful locks possible

I'm confused...baking soda and acv rinses help healthy locks form... FireChild said:
My hair is bleached and dyed. And it was dyed before I bleached. I'd rather have healthy locs that take longer to form.
