How long?

Introduce Yourself

There are timelines with pics to see other people's progress at various stages. Everyone's hair is very different but after a few weeks I had good progress and after 2 months I had significant progress. :)

Being polite on the site

General Talk

I agree with Island Mamma and what I would say in any internet forum is that it is always difficult to interpret someone's TONE. I think that it is very common for comments to be interpreted as more harsh, blunt, sarcastic, etc that is ever really intended. Not to say that it is always that case. I happened upon this site and I have felt totally happy and comfortable here and I have taken all advice as loving and kind and have never thought twice about feeling judged. I knew that I was a newbie to this process and I took advice as loving direction and never as criticisim. I don't think anyone here WANTS to criticize anyone else, but would rather direct people to better methods based on their personal experience. JMO.

Dreading Methods

How far in are you? You can check out my timeline in the members timeline section. I am a little less than 2 months in and I still have plenty of stray hairs, but I also have some very cool dreads that are kinky and crazy.

Hi, hi, hi thereee. :)

Introduce Yourself

I'm about 6 weeks in and it is so easy you can't even believe it! I started mine at the beach where it was windy and I just didn't comb or wash that first week. Then I began washing but no conditioner or brush. I also did a little twist and rip, but to be quite honest, the totally natural dreads are my favorites. I would say the first two weeks are the hardest as far as figuring out what to do with your hair. But after that they start looking more like "dreads" and styles become much easier. My small clip is my best friend ;) Good luck and happy dreading!!!

Member Journals and Timelines

So sorry Cassie! :(I'd like to know how to handle lice as well. I have never had lice before but I imagine it would be a real pain in the ass. How would a person treat the lice without ruining their dreads?

Positive Feedback

General Talk

In the beginning of this journey I couldn't have cared less about what other people thought about my hair because I knew that it was something I was doing for myself. But I guess I assumed that I would catch some flack from people. I have been pleasantly surprised at how many positive remarks I have received. I have had a couple of people stare at me and I was unable to read what they were thinking. But anyone who has actually opened their mouth to me have all said very positive things. An older lady who lives down the street from me saw me when I went to the mailbox and she told me I looked "absolutely adorable". And I have had a few people who wanted to touch them because they thought they were cool. It has just been nice to see that most people seem to be very accepting of it.

beads

Introduce Yourself

I found TONS at walmart. But I think the fabric section at any store would have them. They totally wash the stain off the first time you wash your hair... but I love them even more now that they look more like driftwood.

natural dreadlockss?

Dreading Methods

I started mine the last week in May so I guess I am about 5-6 weeks in. Just stop combing and after about 2 weeks you will see the hair start to cluster together naturally. I did a little twist and rip around my face because I was afraid they would clump too fat. But the reality is that the totally natural dreads at the back of my head are my absolute favorites. No backkcombing is necessary because they will knot totally naturally and my t&r dreads are maturing at exactly the same rate as the totally natural ones. If I find dreads that have formed perfect sizes for me then I slip a bead onto them. If they are clustering too fat then I tear them apart. But they will do all the work on their own and you can just relax :)
