feeling annoyed with my dreadlocks....

Dread Maintenance

here are some pics of my mess right now :(

I just am not a huge fan of wearing my hair down all the time and I hate how it looks and feels up right now. Most of my dreads aren't quite long enough to stay in the tie and so they fall out and flop around and get into my face and arggggghhhh...generally bother me. Plus, one of the reasons that i desired to dreadlock my hair was because i have never been proficient at 'doing' my hair or creating a pleasing 'hair do' and this was a way for me to not have the stresses of that to contend with anymore, but I am feeling like maybe my hair wouldn't 'look so bad' if i knew how to 'style' it a bit better or do anything more skillful than pull it back in a tie :(

I know its hard to tell in a photo, but my hair is SOOOO thick I cannot put my hands around it when it is next the my head and thus the short ponytail that is floating off of my head like 5 inches.

YOurs look like they are doing similar crazy things as mine :o I know that this craziness 'makes' dreadlocks, but it is hard to do anything with them when they are so short and fat and kinky now--I am one who doesn't like my hair down in my face and it is unnerving to not be able to pull it back without it looking like a mop on the top of my head. *so, i guess i am a bit vain, right?!

feeling annoyed with my dreadlocks....

Dread Maintenance

My dreadlocks are 6 months old today and I really have been amazed by how patient I have been with them. I thought that I would freak out about how they looked and need them to be more manicured and 'presentable' and such, but I really have done a great job at just accepting them and letting them be what they needed to be and do what they needed to do...until recently. I hate this phase (it Is a phase right?)--I live in humid (frizzy hair) FL and my hair has shrunk and fattened up so much I can no longer put it in a ponytail (my fav hairdo) and the few times that I manage to eek out a ponytail it is all lopsided and looks like SHIT. I am not a vain person, by far, but I am just really feeling frumpy and unattractive and this isn't helping right now.

Please reassure me that this is only passing phase and that they will grow or become less 'thick' and/or i will reclaim my patience and tolerance for the process cause right now I don't like them :( and I hate that.

I also am not a fan of how they have doubled back on themselves (skinny thin dreads) and have formed flat thick matted dreads vs. rounded, thinner dreads. i tried to put beads on the ones that were like a flat plate of dreadlock (on the back underside of head) but as soon as I took them off (2-3 weeks) they just went back to being flat and bulbous. Will they eventually tighten up and be more dreadlock vs. flat, matted strand o hair?

I will update with photos when I have my camera at hand.

just frustrated.

dread beads--purpose and uses.

Dread Maintenance

@ Jessican EVA--our dreads seem to be about the same age (5 months) and I looked at your photos and mine look very similar to yours in loopiness--the difference is that my hair has shrunk A LOT--used to be to below my bosom and now it is almost at my shoulders except for my undreaded tips. So, it has become hard to put my hair up (i def can't do fancy twists and knots like you do). I totally love them--i guess i am just not used to the shortness of my hair right now. it will get longer though in time.

do you have any pictures you could post of the mats/clumps so i can get a better idea of what you mean? plus i remember your early pics and want to see how they're coming!

and if you beaded two of them together, and just didn't seperate them, i'm sure they would start to congo together in a matter of weeks, but obviously not completely for quite a while. are the thin ones too heavy or something? why do you think they are going to break off?
http://www.naturalchild.org/guest/pam_sorooshian.html plenty of pics here. The thin ones are just simply too thin--they are very light weight, but have doubled up on each other forming a dread clump and then are very thin at the root--these are mainly a few along my hair line at my forehead. I am mainly having the dread clump/mat issue with the ones that are larger in thickness and in the back of my head underneath from where i sleep on them at night (i think). I don't mind the loopiness, but its the loopiness coupled with the ones that have doubled back on themselves and are super short and super thick/flat that are hard to handle and put into pony tails (i must wear pony tails because that is what i am comfortable with--can't stand hair in my face, especially when i am running around with my toddler daughter).just wondering what happens when you put beads on the dreads. does it impede the drealocking/maturing process?

dread beads--purpose and uses.

Dread Maintenance

my dreadlocks are just about 5 months old and very crazy and loopy. My hair has shrunk quite a bit and is just going through one of many awkward maturing phases. All but a few of my 150+ locks have some sort of intense loopiness and I am having a tough time of dealing with it these days. I love my dreads and understand that this is the way to mature locks, but would like to know what, if anything, using beads on a few of these crazy dread clumps will do to round them out a bit. So....Will using beads stop the dread process? Will using beads actually round out and form some of these mats/clumps of hair? How long do i leave them on for?I am not desiring to use beads as ornamentation, but for the sole purpose of rounding out some of the matted and flat dread clumps--these are really hard to manage when I need to put my hair back in a pony tail.If I do nothing (which is my preferred method of haircare) will these dread mats//clumps thin and round out or just get gnarlier? Also, I have a few dreads that are feeling a bit too thin (and in danger of breaking off) and I was wondering if I twisted them with their neighbor and put a bead on the 2 of em if this would wor to congo them together. how long would i expect this to take?thanks.

My dreads are too small

She has at least 100 dreadlocks and she started her set with twist and rip also.

I am this 'she' and I have approx 140-160 dreadlocks. I haven't updated my photos in 2 months--life is too busy to stand still for a photo at the moment. I LOVE my dreadlocks and they are very thin-medium and LOOPY as all hell right now :) many of them are still as they were when I first TnR'd but most are bulking up and crazy twisty, loopy. I only have a few in the very front of my hairline (forehead) that concern me as to being too thin and I am thinking of combining them or combing them out and re sectioning them bigger. Don't stress about your dreadlocks--just be easy. I wash 1x a week and separate them after each wash a day or two later. I haven't let any congo and I have lost half of my length in 4 months. I will update photos tonight.

Timeline, New Dread Extensions

Member Journals and Timelines

would you please share how you extended with human hair that wasn't already wefted/glued to a clip. I want to make extensions out of my old ponytails and would love some guidance on how best to do it! Thanks!

The first set was way over crocheted, the 7 month mark are extensions, from someone else's head. This set is a full head of dreads, and I'm thinking of doing a tutorial on my extension method, it's not a way that I've seen on here, they're permanent, and it's really affective.
