Do dreads grow in at the roots

Dreading Methods

As the other said, they definitely dread 'by themselves'Mine merged themselves together naturally from very skinny to very fat. I started with lots, but my hair had other plans! The only 'maintenance' that you might have is washing and keeping them separated if you want them to remain smaller.

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

You know some of mine that started out separately and merged together over time are still REALLY 2 big chunks of dread that are stuck together with the hairs inbetween them. Also, sometimes I think the direction in which you hair grows has something to do with it. Even without dreads, people's hair naturally tends to clump into sections, as you all know from doing this the natural way. All I did was follow that natural clumping to decide how many locks I would have, and quit separating them at the root.So the end of all 12 of my locks consists of many smaller dreads, like fingers, that I sewed together with thread. Some of them I left all fingery though, as you can see in my profile pic.

Same happened to me. They decided to do their own thing, and after they separated themselves into 12, I liked the thick ones much more than I liked many think ones.

Dr Bronners ~ A quick question

Dread Products

I Use dr bronners and I literally just put a single drop or maybe 2 in my palm and then wet my hands to wash my hair.

Patience is a virtue!

Dreading Methods

I was once a new natty dread. I definitely understand the want want want for my locks to be longer, sooner, NOW NOW NOW!But I feel the strong urge to remind those of you starting out is that TIME is the only factor here. There is little you can do to make your hair the way you want it NOW. My locks were not to the point that I 'wanted' them to be for years and years. Also, remember that the way hair locks is by falling out of your head! This takes time! Hairs can not lock down into the ends until it has detached from your scalp...this too takes nothing but time. Washing your hair can help some of the hairs detach as they naturally would come out in a hairbrush, and only then can they begin to pack down into the locks.Sometimes I look at the ends of my dreads and thing wow, that hair is 10 years old. It would have fallen out and gone down a drain somewhere almost a decade ago if I had not began to lock. But I digress. The point of this thread isIT TAKES TIME AND PATIENCE TO LOCK YOUR HAIR. No need for methods and products, just let your hair do it's thang!

General Questions

eating healthy is the key. And as you already know, the only thing that can truly make your locks longer is TIME TIME TIME. (and patience..it is a virtue)

To cut or not to cut?!

Introduce Yourself

Thank you. They will get to that point if you let them :)For me, originally my plan was to have the locks for a few years then cut them all off and have short hair. Now, 8 years later I had no idea what I had gotten myself into...I love my locks so much that I can't imagine myself without them. There are so many pros, and a few cons to having them be this heavy and long. I do crave short hair sometimes, but I just don't know yet if it is enough to make me actually cut them.Cutting them shorter really just isn't an option for me. I am not sure why, but I have waited so long to get them to this point that cutting them shorter would feel like an injustice. That's why I feel like it is all or nothing.

To cut or not to cut?!

Introduce Yourself

thanks...it is true, beavertails are a part of this life. I did at least get the locks at the nape of my neck to become two locks, but they are certainly big and flat!!Good point about the rejection of vanity. I think that is also a part of why I can't seem to come to terms with ever giving up my locks. I know that when I do, all of a sudden I am going to have to spend SOME time on my hair each day, even if it is really short. Right now I just wrap it up on the top and go.
