saponification is an age old process used to make soap out of oils/fats and mixed with something alkaline like lye. i've made soap myself, and the palm oil just happens to be the base oil they used in this soap - others use coconut oil, shea butter, or even olive oil - which is the base oil used in castile soap, which dr bronner's is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soap Under the "Fats" section on this page it mentions that palm oil is one of the fats commonly used to create soap. On this page it explains the difference between soap and detergent http://www.housekeepingchannel.com/a_767-Soaps_Vs._Detergents any of the lauryl sulfates would fall under the classification of detergent. soaringeagle said:

I'm a big eo and herb person myself, read your thread on the herbal hair rinses and thought it was great.ingredients for kb soap: Saponified Oils of Palm, Coconut, Castor Bean and Certified Organic Hempseed Oil with Essential Oils of Tea Tree, Rosemary and PeppermintNope, no SLS. have u tried the baking soda? out cleans any soap
and a hell of alot cheaper
well ... i've tried alot of the no poo cleaning methods i've seen mentioned and ruled them out for me personally. baking soda seems to irritate and dry out my scalp worse than soap, acv doesn't work because my hubby despises me smelling like a salad and won't come near me when i've used it lol... and water only just doesn't do it for me even when i've given my scalp months to adjust and start making less oil. that being said, i do NOT use anything with SLS ever. to wash, i alternate the use of indian herbs - shikakai, amla and some others - and all natural shampoo bars, plus i henna if i feel like adding some color. the poo bars i had been using tho are too moisturizing for baby dreads, i think - and the knotty boy bar is not, and leaves no residue. so i enjoy it.oh yeah i CANNOT use dr bronners either... it gives me horrid dandruff for some reason, tho my hubby loves the peppermint version of it and the kids use the citrus/orange.Jenn

If anyone has any knotty boy bars or liquid they don't want i will gladly take them off your hands - i know kb isn't very well regarded on here, and i know and agree with most of the reasons why, so no need for lectures. but personal feelings about their philosophies aside, i happen to love their soaps and what they do for my hair. if anyone has any to sell/swap, note me or email me at earthymamawitchAThotmailDOTcom & i'll get back to you.BTW I'm Jenn and this is my 4th set of dreads. 3 years total dreading now and I just started this - hopefully final - set of dreadies a week ago. and I am WAX FREE.

Dread Dissection (after dread wax use)

Dread Products

that actually looks just like the inside of marco's dreads when I was helping repair the damage a few weeks ago - I tried to take pics but the camera I have SUCKS at macro shots and it was just a blur :(But I was so disgusted. Plus I had to go wash my hands like every 10 minutes because they kept getting this nasty coated feeling *shudders* and he had followed their protocol *to a t" and used the baking soda clean AND a hair dryer to try & melt it out before I worked on him. Lots of his dreads just fell out because the wax was all that was holding them together.Jenn

herbs good for your head and dreads

Dread Products

I've got nettles/rosemary/peppermint sitting on my head right now... have had some itching and flakiness lately, so I'm hoping it will help. I love this thread, as I consider myself a bit of a kitchen witch and am always brewing one concoction or another lol. There's some good info on using catnip tea both for strengthening and adding moisture to hair... I used it on my last set of dreads and it definitely helped without adding residue. It's also antibacterial and antifungal. Here's an article about it: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=118 Hope this helps someone.Jenn
