Dying my roots brown

Dread Maintenance

Thanks SE. that link was very helpful! Just to be sure I get it though, no matter what method I choose to do (although the natural route for brown seems best....and maybe fun koolaid colors later!) I really need to wait to do anything until my locks are tight, right? Or, can I just do the thyme and sage at anytime and just gently rinse out all the dye. Since it is natural I'm guessing that I may not have to worry if some is left behind until the next washing (unlike the chemical one where I realize it all needs to get rinsed out). Since Henna is more potent, I'd probably have to wait on that one?If you don't mind, can you just tell me real quick how to make the sage/thyme tea? thanks! soaringeagle said:
u might want to read our new dying dreads guide (links over there---> )
theres many non dye plant based options that might be better
ofcourse the best options just to let the hair go natural as it wants to a lil grey never hurt noone

Dying my roots brown

Dread Maintenance

I started about 1 month ago so still have lots to go but I do see baby dreads forming. I changed my hair color from blonde to a brown closer to my natural color before starting this process b/c I knew I'd have to wait to dye my roots. But my roots are coming in with LOTS of grey and I hate it! I really want to dye my roots only and wonder if there is any real strong reason that I shouldn't. I plan on getting a more natural dye from the health food store and try to just get it on my roots. Then I plan on washing it out with BS and ACV. I've just been washing with BS and my hair is getting pretty dry. Wondering if anyone has any idea if the brown dye will make my hair (not the roots) even more dry and possibly damage them. I know that bleach damages but I'm hoping that the brown dye won't be as drying and damaging. Also wondering if the washing out of the dye will be too much for my baby dreads to "handle"... Thanks for your help :)

thanks SE. I have a Trader Joe's version of Pure Castille Soap and after looking at the ingredients, it is a little different from Dr.Bronner's liquid castille. Thought you might have an idea whether I could use the TJ's version or if I should get the bronners?here are the ingredients for the TJs: water, potassium cocoate (derived from coconut), potassium tallate (derived from pine), glycerin, oilive oil, peppermint oil, aloe verahere are the ing from bronners:Water, Organic Coconut Oil*, Potassium Hydroxide**, Organic Olive Oil*, Mentha Arvensis*, Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Peppermint Oil*, Citric Acid, Tocopherolnot sure if it really makes a difference but the potassium cocoate, potassium tallate, glycerin are not in bronners and that might make a big difference...thanks for your help, you are so awesome! I've learned so much from this site and am so loving the dreading process, thanks you and all these really cool people here :) soaringeagle said:
the liquid bronners is best so u can dilute it
baking soda should rinse out real easy but maybe u should make it weaker?

i rend to rinse mine a whole lot just to be sure but doesnt seem to need much to rinse after all the baking soda solutions the exact consistency of water.. so water should just help it flow tight out

I forgot to mention that I'm starting to see separation in my hair and I'm getting really excited! It looks like my hair may dread faster than I thought it would :) Tomorrow will be one week! I may try to get some pics up in my journal tomorrow.

Just a quesiton about washing with baking soda...I'm afraid I'm not rinsing it all out b/c my hair feels a little crunchy in spots after it dries. I'm a little worried about the rinsing process b/c I don't want to mess up what's starting in my hair (the baby dreads) but then I may not be getting out all the baking soda? Could it just be that I"m used to my hair being conditioned every wash before starting the dreads? Also, when you guys talk about Dr. bronners, are you talking about the BAR soap? Can I use that on my scalp/baby dreads?

This morning I washed my hair and rewashed it with baking soda (and a drop of tea tree oil) to make sure it was really clean. I didn't condition it and I didn't comb it. Now, I guess the waiting begins. I'm really excited! My hair is a little crunchy so I'm guessing I didn't rinse out all the baking soda. I'll do another rinse tonight/tomorrow and hopefully it will all be out. If I'm not doing this right, please let me know. It seems so simple, so that's why I'm checking in.

Would you use this?

Dread Products

I bought a product from a woman who has dreads (she makes the product and uses it on her dreads) and am wondering if any of you would use it. I like the idea of just using aloe (when I need the locks to be a little neater) but already purchased this product before I found this site. The butter contains the following ingredients: dehydrated mango juice, shea butter, lime juice, viamin e, and a few essential oils.I'd love to hear what you all think about using this product...or not :)tasha
