Getting my hair started

Dreading Methods

Ok, I haven't started my dreads yet b/c I was waiting for an event to be over (yesterday) so I'm excited to get started. However, after reading another post this morning, I realized that I may need to really get my hair clean before I start. This past week I've had my hair colored to a darker brown (from blonde) to be a closer match to my natural color b/c I didn't want to have to deal with any major dying processes while my dreads were forming. So should I do a wash with baking soda to get all the crap out (that I can't see) or will just a regular wasing with a cleanising shampoo be enough? thanks guys :)

Getting my hair started

Dreading Methods

Ok, so I'll try separating my hair after I wash it into dreads (it pretty much is one big crazy mess, not wear a hat at night and just reseparate the dreads in the am after sleeping and see how it goes!I have a wedding coming up the 2nd weekend in May. Do you think I should start this before the wedding? I'm not in the wedding but I'm not sure how unruly my hair will be looking at that time. I'm imagining my hair out of the shower without being combed and it is quite a sight ;) If you think it may start to actually look like dreads by that time, that is cool..if not, maybe I'll wait to start after (although I'd love to get going).

Getting my hair started

Dreading Methods

I'm looking at starting my first (and hopefully only) set of locks but have a couple of questions about my hair and getting the process started. My hair has been bleached/highlighted so it is pretty dry and somewhat frizzy if left untreated (from the color processing). I have started dying it darker before I start the process so I wouldn't have to worry about severe roots during the locking process. But here is my main question:After I wash my hair, even when I condition it before getting out of the shower, my hair is completely full of knots. I don't know if this is normal but I really have to work at brushing out the knots to make my hair tangle free. So, to start this process, I will just wash and not condition my hair but when I get out of the shower, should I leave my hair knotted up as it is from washing? Is this when I could start separating into locks, while knotted up like this? Should I try to finger comb it to make it less knotty? Will this knottiness help speed up the locking process? Also, should I sleep with something on my head at night?I am really excited about using this natural process for locking up my hair. I was all set to get it back combed but thankfully came across this site just in time.

Want to start my locks naturally

Introduce Yourself

Actually, looking back , I said our lives are not exciting. Well, actually to me they are. we may not do the most adventurous things and go on many trips but just the fact that we can do whatever we choose every morning (at least me and the kids can...my husband has to go to work so we can do this ;)...and he doesn't mind) is exciting! tasha said:

Roblynn, yes, I do belong to that group (with Dayna Martin on Yahoo groups) and love it! I saw her speak once and she is truly an amazing woman. I am really impressed that you unschooled all your children and am not surprised that they turned out doing just fine ;) I am so looking forward to see how my little ones experience life and how that impacts them when older.Do you belong to that group? I love your analogy about children and dreads. Btw, I'm not surprised to find that some people here unschooled their kids :) Roblynn Neumann said:
Welcome and good luck with your dreads. Do you belong to the group radical unschoolers? We unschooled all 7 of our kids, well the youngest is still only 6, but the rest are pretty much grown and doing their thing. Best thing we ever did for our family, and they all even agree with that. You will find your dreads are kind of like your kids, each one unique and doing their own thing. It's a journey! Pura vida.

wow, you unschooled when probably not many people even thought about that type of learning :) You are truly a brave woman. Although still on the cusp of challenging tradiontal learning styles, I have lots of support out there. I imagine you may have had little support, I'm very impressed! Glad to hear that your dd did not problems getting into a college. I'jm sure she is an impressive woman. What does she say about her unschool experience? It sounds like your son might be similar to my dd. She is just 3 but keeps asking about when can she go to school. As a RU mom it is really hard for me to hear that but, as you said, it is an individual choice and she may respond really well to that type of learning. And that is the foundation of this parenting style...I have to allow her the freedom to make her choices and respect them.My ds (now 8yo) started out in Montessori up until K at which time he had such a rough experience . Although my husband and I agreed that this experience at the school was pretty bad, we credit it for our leap into this amazing lifestyle!thanks for your story about your kids :) Sister Rags said:
From the 3rd grade on I unschooled my oldest, my daughter, who is now 24. It was an excellent option for her and for her personality. She's doing fine in college now.

My younger, my son, did the traditional school route (but started with a Montessori education). He was a natural for traditional school and is also doing really well in college.

Such an individual choice, ya really have to "listen" to the child's spirit.

Alicia, I bet it was the Martin family. dayna and her family are very big in the radical unschooling movement. She and her family do travel a lot and she is very, very open to discussing her unschooling lifestyle, and has been on tv, etc. She is my inspiration :) Alicia said:
I saw a family who did unschooling on a tv show a couple of months ago. I think it was called 'radical parenting' or something like that. The unschooling actually looked really cool and when the parents explained it, it sounded like a better option than regular schooling. The family took their kids all over the place though and had awesome hands on teaching tools in their own home.
