Finished Backcombing

Dreading Methods

nice! i looked like sideshow bob after i finished backcombing lol. all you have to do now is be patient with them. personally i think that covering them up is the best thing (its easier to forget about them and avoid playing with your hair tht way). but anywayz...if no one has said so before: welcome to the dreadlock journey and good luck!

I totally trust this website

Dreading Methods

just look around on this site a bit more and you'll see the truth about salon "dreads" and wax schemes like dreadheadhq. johnny clean says you have to have perfect and uniform dreadlocks, but locs are all about individuality. each dreadlock is like a snowflake-unlike any other :] Robbbb said:
Thanks dudes, i'm meaning like clean dreads, dreads that have perfect strands,, your dreads look awesome. i've been to saloons and they always want too rip me off and not give me proper dreadlocks, i have no idea how to get them waxed or w.e it is called, any ideas?

how people percieve someone with dreads

General Talk

i always feel like people are staring at me or judging me because i appear Caucasian, have dreads, and live in the suburbs (where dreads r uncommon) all at the same time. i just try to ignore the negative vibes and embrace the positive ones- like supportive friends in real life or on this site ;)

How do you keep your dreaded hair while it's growing?

Dreading Methods

except for ripping and separating any hairs weaving themselves into the wrong dread. one beautiful thing about dreadlocks is their simplicity: just wash your hair with residue free shampoo and rip apart the "congos". happy dreading :) Knottysleeves said:
Exactly what SE and Grey said.
Your new growth will dread by itself... no maintenance needed.

Well thanks for sharing that cool trick :)

no, there's no friction, all it is is running the towel through once. just a slow combing motion that lays the frizzies down. try it sometime!!

Dying Dreads

Introduce Yourself

Thanks to everyone that replied, you all helped me out more than u know :) and if anyone wants to know..I'm not gonna risk dying my dreads- the blonde mixed with my root color looks cool anyways

I dyed my dreads a bright copper red a few months in (I think it was 3 or 4 months in) and while I did an okay job, I'm not sure that it was entirely worth it. I was still getting red dye out of my dreads for a week or better after the initial dye job, and the color was really really uneven. Granted, I was advised to pour all the mix into a bowl and try to apply it with my hands... not a good idea if you're applying dye all by yourself. I about choked on the fumes even though I was in a really well ventilated area. If you're going to try to do something like that, I would try consulting someone (my first thought was Lish from 'Get up, Dread up' another dread forum/livejournal... she's been bleaching and dying her dreads for years with awesome results) who's done it frequently and with a high amount of success and see if they can give you any tips/help you do the job. Personally, I find it easier to just embrace your natural hair color, but I won't lie, I do (and very often) find myself longing for red locks again.

Dying Dreads

Introduce Yourself

So I usually dye my hair blond every few months and I know that dying your hair BEFORE dreading helps the process but now I'm wondeing about if how dying my hair post-dreading would work out. So here are my questions 1) is dying hair after dreaging difficult or even possible? 2) is dying dreads damaging in anyway?
