Feeling Confident
General Talk
I never keep them in. Proud parent, I am!
Go natural. You won't regret it. I have curly hair too, not as curly as your I reckon, But natural is definitely the way to go.
I spent all my teenage years sporting dreads (13-19). If you are of a sensitive nature, you may be best to wait until you are mature enough to take criticism, because you will definitely get it. This is just a part of having dreads. It is not to say that you will only receive negative comments. Many many people will compliment you, but you have to be able to take the good with the bad.
I would actually say that it is more difficult to go through when your growing up. Teenagers can be so rotten. Really horrible. But you will come to know who is worth spending time on and who is really your friend. If someone doesn't want to hang around because of how you wear your hair, then they can fuck right off.
Now, how should you deal with it. Laugh off the negative and thank anyone who compliments you. wear your hair proudly and embrace the mess. Just explain that you are growing dreads the natural way. If they are interested then explain more. If not, don't bother. When they judge, and they will, let them judge. You know who you are and what you are about, but how could they!?
Its easier to prevent thick dreads than it is to make one into smaller ones. While dreads are forming they are easily pulled apart, so there is nothing for you to worry about as long as you separate weekly.
There are loads of examples of hair by all methods, but you should upload your pics, nonetheless. It's great to look back over the months and see how you've progressed.
Natural dreads look more, well, natural. They will flow fine and you may well end up with the look you have in mind (lions mane), but there is no guarantee, no matter what method you use.
I went natural, on this set, 10 months ago, from only 3-4 inches. Have a look at my page and you can see the progress.
You don't know your age?..Hmm..
Anyway, dread on.
Personally, I would TnR the rest of them. This way you can let the crochet recover while let the other ones lock up. Whatever you do, never go near that salon guy again and dont pay him a cent if you still owe him. He done far more damage than he did good.
Just stop brushing, but do it now. You wont regret it. Your hair is long enough to dread, so you might as well start now.
They will thicken a lot as they mature, over the period of at least a year. After that you can let them congo (grow together) if you still think they are too thin. All you have to do is not separate and they will congo.
Also, healthy dreads mature to the size of the section on which they sit.
I use jojoba. It does the trick. Once every few months is fine for me. Be warned though, baby dreads are not really meant to be conditioned. Maybe they will loosen up, maybe not. It consensus is that it is generally best to wait for them to mature, but do as you feel.
