ball of hair?

General Questions

Well now, your hair is on its journey, it will do many crazy things in the next few months and what you are worried about is just one of them. When your hair is wet, pull sections apart that are joining with other sections, wet hair is stronger and can take more abuse. Just hold onto the ends and pull them apart. Some people need to separate certain areas daily, some weekly or even bi-weekly. Your hair will tell you when you need it. Congos are formed by sections joining together and not being separated. For drying purposes, the ideal max is 1 inch sections, where it meets the scalp. Fat dreads can take up to 36 hours to dry once mature.

I'd be worried about your square shaped head instead, oh wait, that's not really you in your profile pic...sorry about that.

You will have loops, zigs, zags, hair ball looking sections and any other crazy thing that can happen will. No worries with any of it, just keep up on the separating and you will be fine. Embrace your journey with open arms and have fun.....Peace

Life Issues Facing Dreads

I guess it depends how you look at it . Some people see a glass 1/2 empty, others 1/2 full. I do not see mixed race people as black, I see them as mixed, so yes, in my eyes it is racist. Do I have family members that fit into that catagory?.....Yes I do, and they are both to me...not just Black, not just White, they are a beautiful blend together. That is my personal perception. (Please take no offense) Peace

An example off the top of my head, actor Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock is of mixed race, and I do not think of him as Black only

Just wow.
I understand feeling hurt by it, but what he said wasn't racist. And in America Bob is black, as a mixed race guy with mix raced kids, we are black. Racism and stereotypes are a hard thing to live with. In his round about way he was simply saying whites don't look good with dreads. Blacks didn't look good with the high cut flat top. (That was a horrible phase) he was simply pointing out a look, perception.

As a black person, who is mixed but since we live in America I'm black, I'm very accepting. But just because someone says whites shouldn't have dreads, doesn't make them racist. I bet he would say Mexicans, Asians, and others if he ran into them. It sounds like he runs into the familiar rich white kid wanting to rebel. It is more a social type casting. It is annoying yes, like when my white niece is like, dude grow a fro, yeah you'd look awesome with a fro.

Life Issues Facing Dreads

First of all, this person, whoever wrote that article is such a racist. Second of all, this person, is very ignorant on the history of dreads.

Bob Marley was of mixed race, his father was a White English Jamaican and his mother was an Afro-Jamaican. This is a quote from Bob Marley, "I don't have prejudice against meself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don't deh pon nobody's side. Me don't deh pon the black man's side nor the white man's side. Me deh pon God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white"

A man so full of love for everyone, sang with his inner soul, and wanted this world full of love, and yet there are still comments that separate us. IGNORANCE and SHAME ON ALL RACISTS, no matter who it comes from.

How did this person even come to the conclusion that Caucasian dreads are dirty? That we don't brush our teeth even. I think that they crawled out from under a rock in a cave and met up with a "White" roomie who was just as filthy as them due to living in that cave.

Prejudice comes with ignorance, Why do they assume we like Reggae so much that we want to be a Rastafarian? Why do they assume we never wash? Why do they assume anything? Because that ignorant person has not opened up their heart to Human Beings. Because they never sat down with a Dreadie with long, beautiful locks to have a chat and a cup of coffee. Black or White, there are Dread Heads out there that are filthy, due to homelessness or whatever, but it is not a Caucasian thing only, it is a down on your life thing.

I hope that if that person has children , the children will be able to one day teach them what love is all about to fellow human beings. The comments do not piss me off, they truly break my heart. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE If everyone had this for one another, the world would be such a better place.

tnr done wrong ?

Dreading Methods

Okay, so you did the twist & rip, so did I. That method is not dreads at all, but he placement of sections where you want your dreads to be. The process of mature dreads is 1-2 years. Here are the changes to expect: The sections you made will loosen, or maybe even fall out. They will start to form all crazy shapes, looping, zig zagging, shrinking, fattening up, pieces sticking out, frizz will happen to you shortly. It is doing what it should do. The weird shape you are worried about is the hair moving around to do its thing.

The dread APPEARANCE you made with the method only lasts for a short few days, and then they go on their journey! That is what your hair is doing now. You have done nothing wrong. With T&R, just make sure all the sections you made are 1" or less in diameter, due to drying times, fatter than that they can take 2 days or so to dry once mature.

You have begun your journey now, all you have to do is keep them clean, sit back, and let them do their thing. There is no worries, just sit back and enjoy the funky, crazy, wild ride and you will be rewarded with a head full of beautiful dreads. I won't lie, some days you will need patience and on those days just put on a tam to cover your hair, the next day is a new day!......Peace

TREATMENT FOR HEAD LICE?

Dread Maintenance

Too help keep lice from ever coming, spritz hair daily with a mixture of water and about 10-30 drops of tea tree oil, depending on the size spray bottle. This works for dreaded and undreaded hair, safe and great to use on school age children, as they are usually the ones that bring them home. Just give the bottle a good shake each time before using to mix the oil up and spritz lightly just a few times. The aroma will keep the little buggers from hopping on, they don't like the smell. A great deterrent!

Yes, read Soaring Eagles post on methods to get rid of lice if you have them. My comments above is to help ensure you don't get them.....Good luck.....peace

Oil questions

Introduce Yourself

Here is a link posted by Soaring Eagle for essential oils that will answer all you questions: http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/essential-oils-for-dreads-and-scalp-health?page=8&commentId=3754945%3AComment%3A1628009&x=1#3754945Comment1628009

Fragrance oils are not the same as essential oils, only use the 100% essential oils on you hair / dreads, and the tea tree oil you have is fine, it is the same as mine.

I mix drops of the oils with water in a spray bottle to mist my hair for the lovely smells.....Peace

DREADLOCK SECTIONING

General Questions

Izzy, the ideal way for dreads is to let your hair section naturally for at least a couple of weeks. After that time if you want to do the twist & method, you can use the naturally formed sections. All you will need to do is separate any sections that are larger than the 1 inch. This way they will be in random areas instead of the grid pattern as Soaring Eagle said. Hope this helps you....Peace

DREADLOCK SECTIONING

General Questions

Hi there, they seem to be larger than 1 inch sections, you only have 3 dreads from ear to ear. The ideal size is nothing larger than a quarter coin. (25cents). Also, the bands should come out right away. They will make weak points in the sections. and if made from rubber, will dissolve when washing hair and stick to your sections. Larger dreads do look really cool, but take 1-2 days to dry when mature.....peace

Wax is evil......what to expect when I de-wax?

General Questions

Best thing for your dreads. Without taking out the wax, down the road you may have gotten mold growing in them, now you won't have to worry about that. I hope you make a post and let others know how the Wax B Gone worked and how many times you needed to use it, it would sure help out others if you did....Glad you had your shrinkage already, I found that the most shocking part.....Peace
