Life Issues Facing Dreads

SE, I just have to say I applaud you for being so patient and kind to people when it is not always deserved. It's very hard for me to always be nice when people are so ignorant. Most of the time I can stay nice but there are the few times i can't control my frustration.

I am somewhat amazed that I did not become racist. My parents are a bit on the racist side, I don't really think they notice it. They grew up in a different time (which is not an excuse) so certain things have stuck with them. (Like interracial dating) I never understood it. I have always looked at people as people and not black,white,purple,pink...etc. I just wish more people could see it the same way. There may be insignificant differences, but that is not always race related. Everyone is different in the sense we all require different care with our bodies. Whether it is maintaining a certain diet for health reasons or using a different soap because our skin is drier/oilier than others. It's not specific to race, it varies from person to person.

I'm just glad my children are not exposed to a lot of racist or discriminatory things. My younger 2 will notice that some peoples' skin is different and they will ask and I will explain that they are different for the same reason some people have blonde hair or brown hair, green eyes or blue eyes... etc. My 6 yr old noticed my little cousin has darker skin. He was confused because we are all lighter skinned. He has never seen the babies father so he didn't know he has darker skin (Puerto Rican). It was actually amusing because he just looked so puzzled. As soon as we told him the babies father has darker skin he just said "Oh" and left it at that.

I am tired, so I ramble lol...sorry =D

I have a feeling he is just a troll....I can't stand them. They love me though because they hit my one nerve that makes me need to argue/debate a topic. I have to learn not to feed the trolls.....

I have to agree with new. But WOW...that's messed up. If us "blue eyed serpents" weren't meant to have dreaded hair wouldn't our hair, oh i dunno.....NOT DREAD on it's own? I can't stand when people pull the race thing into something that doesn't have anything to do with the color of our skin or our ethnicity. GRRR...

About dreads and crochet hooks

Dreading Methods

Wow so much went on in just a few hours lol...anywho...the reason they are "flaming" her about it is because she gave advice in a different post on here saying it was a good idea to crochet. I started with crocheting and once I read things on here about why it's not good to do, I stopped. And in 4 days time, just 4 days, I can tell the difference in letting my hair dread on it's own vs forcing it to look nice. It's worth it to let it be. They weren't telling her to stop, they were advising her she should, but it was (obviously) still her decision to make. They just dont want people giving false advice to others when they are, still new to the process. Most people on here (from what I have read) have started with the wrong ways and either have had to start over or it takes 2x as long to recover from the wrong ways. The advice the experienced ones give is worth listening to. They do know the right and wrong ways. Most prefer natural, but they even say if you don't want to go natural then do the TnR way. And truthfully if people don't want others responding to their public posts then they should make them private for their friends or post elsewhere. SE and most others are only trying to help, not harm. Most have experienced the wrong ways and if they haven't their friends have. SE has seen people lose their dreads to the wrong methods, that's how he can say what he says. I just know that I will never crochet my dreads again...or palm roll for that matter. I am leaving them alone. (with the exception of washing and the occasional aloe if I need to look nice)

and I am pretty sure SE meant fire, as in hot...a stove produces the same effect if touched. I have bonfires and had to warn my children that fire is hot, they knew stoves where hot, but fire looks different. So either way the message was the same...don't touch or it will hurt.

I dont think Boom meant "women" in the plural sense, I could be wrong though. I took it as he meant "woman" as in Andrea. But on that note I agree with you Hans. =)

"women"?
Okay, before I respond to Andra I have to respond to you Boom...

It's not "women" it's "humans". We hate being wrong.
When we present something, even if it's a view or an action we aren't holding too tightly to, we tend to get on the defensive when we're told we're wrong.
Even if we face evidence proving us undeniably wrong we tend to get defensive and respond aggressively because we just don't "want" to be wrong.

Whether a person is right or wrong doesn't dictate this knee jerk reaction of going on the defensive, just how it feels to be told to be wrong and what tools one has (psychologically speaking) to deal with that, and those tools aren't gendered, they're human.

None of us have seen her locks nor do we know for a fact what effect crocheting has had on them, so we can't say with any 100% conviction that they are damaged. It's "likely" given how crocheting works, but it's not a 100% given either.

Still, and now I am addressing Andra as well, it is demonstrable that using a metallic object to manipulate the hairs in locks does come with a significant risk, practically a guarantee, that "some" hairs will be broken, and once broken, they can never be "un-broken".

Also, Andra, Just cause you started a discussion doesn't mean that you're the only person who the replies to the discussion are directed at, and even if you are, starting a response to a reply with an all caps, multiple question mark, "OMG" infused response is rather rude, 'specially when someone's taking the time to explain how they agree with you, on what, and why.
It makes you come off as argumentative and pissy and can make a person disinclined to continue to agree with you.

Yes, I read your entire post. I also read all of the responses to the post. I expressed my view on the "topic being discussed".
If you can't handle people discussing a topic that you've raised in a public forum, even when they're actually bloody agreeing with you, perhaps you want to reconsider raising topics in public forums.

Wow...I almost wish I had watched that guys videos, maybe I would have never thought to use the crochet hook. The videos I watched are http://youtu.be/gt3d3N-rKbg and http://youtu.be/dr4wqlfvruI I figured (at the time) "Hey she's got dreads, she HAS to know what she is talking about." Apparently not. Thanks for making me understand why it's best to leave them be.
