Such thing as too small of a section?

Dread Maintenance

solarlove:

Here’s a photo of one big section that automatically started breaking into 3. Should I leave it? Would love some input. I’m a little scared that the smaller sections wouldn’t be sturdy enough.

A lot of mine started out that way (my photos are old).  I was really worried about that too, but I just kept telling myself "the dread will end up the width of the base." Some of them are still super little. It's neat though, some of them still bunched up doing a weird loopy zig zag and because of how tiny they are it's a bit absurd :P

The way my super straight hair formed, the under side developed waaaay faster than the top bits, so I still have some straight hair on top that's still trying to find a home. I just think that they will probably survive on their own like the ones below did.  Or if they are too little, they will either find a big brother to take care of them, or I can join them up with one later.  Would be much easier than forcing them into larger sections and then realizing you shouldn't have.

New dreadhead

Introduce Yourself

Holy cow! As I was reading your post, I was ready to see pictures that looked super sad and messed up.  But they do look good! Especially for how you did them/how quickly you achieved the "look."

People grow dreads for all types of reasons, absolutely, and if you just dig the look then there isn't anything wrong with that!  That being said, if I were you, I wouldn't do any more "maintenance," at least for a while.  It really does more harm than good, even if you're just messing about.  I used to fiddle obsessively with my dreads because they felt cool and I was also afraid that if I didn't separate them constantly, they'd turn into something I wouldn't like.  Oddly enough, once I stopped bugging them, they began to tidy themselves up and grow much nicer.  I still fiddle with them, but I don't try to "force" them to do anything.  (I definitely need to update my pictues :P)

Now that you've got a nice base for a style that you like, I think you should just let them be.  They look spaced out really well, so it looks like once they begin to loosen up and truly "dread" up, they'll mature at decent sizes and in a nice "pattern" or whatever you want to call it.

Dreads DO form their size and shape partially by holding in hair that would normally fall from your head or get brushed out, so messing about with them too much can easily pull out clumps or hairs that you wished would stay in.  Breaking hairs/losing hairs/thinning will easily happen if you force them too much with maintenance or the hook.  So let those babies freee!

I think they're going to look pretty great if you let em loosen up and mature naturally.

Cheers!

x-Jessie

Cultural Appropriation blah blah blah

General Talk

Also, let me just say, obviously I know this isn't a "white people site" or something gross like that. I just know that there are a ton of different, open minded people here that generally feel dreadlocks can be worn by anyone, not just a specific race/culture.

... reread my post and it seemed a bit off, so I felt the need to add this in. 🤐

Apparently when "white people" have "locs", they aren't "locs", they are "just matted hair" and we are incorrectly stealing an African hairstyle.🤦

I ended up on one of the threads just saying that if they *are* "real" dreads, then the fact that it happens naturally should be proof that anyone has a right to wear them.

And if they aren't "real" dreads, then they're something else entirely so it shouldn't bother them, and the conversation is irrelevant and flawed from the start. Nobody has responded to that. I'm just racist, I guess.🤷

Oy, I could use a little help here for anyone who is bored or has some extra time/energy to spare.  I was kindly keeping this YouTube thread to myself since it wasn't that big of deal and we've all heard it before, but now I'm getting called a racist and illiterate soo..

It's the first comment that I'm talking about, the one with almost 80 replies that says "Highlighted Comment."

There are other threads on that video that I'm involved in, but they all seem to be about the same.

I hope everyone is doing well, staying safe and sane! The boards have kind of dried up lately I've noticed, so I'm not sure if anyone is even going to see this let alone expend the energy of going through all of that.  But I figured it wouldn't hurt anything to throw a link out.

See ya!

Here we go! *natural *

Member Journals and Timelines

Wow! In some of your pictures your hair looks so much like mine. But it seems to be going so much quicker! I wonder why that is.. hm. I guess that extra straightness really makes a difference.

I've been growing mine since December, but I was still brushing the top part..then I ended up combing out the tnr sections I had to start over for a full head of natural, so it's more like the middle of January.. Definitely need to get some more recent updated pictures. But yours seem to be loving their new style and getting right down to business!
Congratulations on such a beautiful start.

is it okay to wet my free form dreads every morning?

Dread Maintenance

I don't really have a for sure answer for you, but I am in the same boat. My hair is so straight and it flattens -.-
I have done the spray bottle thing a handful of times but then I started wondering if actually rinsing would be better.
I guess we will see what the others say. What month are you in?

Loops and zigzags

Dread Maintenance

lopenator: It will. Just stop waiting for it to happen. It makes it take longer. Just live your life and check back some time later.

That's what I've been doing and you're right, it totally makes a difference. When I first started really focusing on this head of dreads it was the month BEFORE school started. Now that I'm back in college I'm noticing huge changes every week or so without even fussing :) When people say leave it and forget it, that's the damn truth. Awesome.

Loops and zigzags

Dread Maintenance

bruiseviolet:

My dreads are about 3 months old now and they're looping like crazy :)

So jealous. I've got some kinda wavy like and little itty bitty loop bumps but no real LOOPS.. at least not yet. I'm a little concerned I won't get them at all with hair as straight as mine :(

I want all the loops and zig zags (especially craving zig zags) and texture and waviness! I find that stage so beautiful. <3<3 I'm assuming it'll come with time.. I hope! *fingers crossed*
