Vicki's Dreadlock Shampoo

Dread Products

My hair looks different now that I'm using the shampoo, more 'dry' I guess :) I'm trying to wash with cold water but I'm a coward :D I try and wash as cool as possible, certainly not hot. Right now it's kind of annoying because I'm in the middle of moving, so me and my boyfriend are staying at his moms place for a few days before we take a boat to the UK, once we're settled down I'll try and use proper cold water. I've done it before, I know I can, but it's that first step that is the hardest :P

I will probably make some pictures around the 20th, that's when I'm at my two month mark and it would be a full month of using the shampoo, but I don't know when I will be able to upload them because I won't have a laptop when we get there. I'm a pretty off-grid person, spend most of my time outdoors, so that's normal for me, but I do need a laptop for studying/working so I hope to be able to upload new pics this month :) Maybe after I've dyed my hair with henna too, should be interesting!

Vicki's Dreadlock Shampoo

Dread Products

They arrived pretty quick for me, less than 2 weeks I think. Probably got lucky. And I've been using it for almost 2 weeks now and loving it, though I am having some dandruff problems now which I haven't had for years since I stopped using shampoos (I was using 'natural' and organic shampoos some 2 years ago or so). My hair is very soft now and looks great, but no locks yet :P Smells amazing though. Can't decide which one I like best, I have patchouli, goddess and nag champa and love all three of them. Very happy with it, just hoping the dandruff will go away over time, might be stress related too.

Thanks guys :) I plan on posting more around my birthday which is in about 20 days and I would have just arrived in Scotland (I'm already saying I live there, but I'm moving from another country) so that should be interesting.

Good news! I finally have the shampoo :) it was at my mom's place for a week already, but couldn't get it until a few days ago. And let me tell you it is AMAZING. I have Patchouli, Nag Champa and Goddess and I've tried two of them and loving it. They're just delicious, I want to eat my hair :P Thank you aunt Vicki <3

whats wrong with looking like a vegan activists/  btw  most vegan activists look like everyone else.. except not as fat or unhealthy.

an so true after cutting my 1st set due to pressure from negative people ..i was mor e miserable then at any other time of my life

and regrowing my hair i was happy again (despite just months before endig up in a wheelchair)

if you can;'t really be yourself how can you ever be happy

Nothing wrong with that in my opinion :) I do some activism, that's why he said it to me, but when I do I always look quite neutral anyway. And yeah, I've also cut my hair a few times, I got a mohawk to look tougher haha :D

That's a great story Soaring Eagle! :) I'm happy for you.

@theodora-stella I know it can be hard to be who you want to be but from my own personal experience I know that when I do what I truly want to do and dress the way I do and in this case grow my hair the way I want to; I feel happy. Even when other people don't agree. My dad is a racist bigot, he really won't like me with dreadlocks. My brother says it will make me look like a typical vegan hippy activist. Of course I care about what they say, but I try my best not to let it influence my happiness because in the long run, I know what I want and there's nothing wrong with that :) So prove your friend wrong, with beautiful natural dreadlocks that probably smell great!

drying my hair after washing (freeform, just started)

Dread Maintenance

Totally :) I've had long hair for half my life now and I don't even remember how I used to dry my hair but I've patted it dry and let it air dry for the past 10 years or so now. It's only since I started letting my hair lock that I've considered changing it but I've been worried it also damages my hair unnecessarily so it's back to the old habits for me. I hate tying up my hair so that won't be a problem Laugh

Natural part Day 1 natural

Dread Maintenance

FemalePheromones: If it does it naturally then there's not much you can do about it. It has to part somewhere.

This :) I also have a pretty even parting in the middle of my head, however I am noticing locks of hair straying from that now so maybe it won't be very visible after a while. I wouldn't worry about it :D

Product Advice

Tinklebury:

When I looked the liquids all seem to have ' rosemary & green tea infusion' on the ingredient list..

I'm struggling to find an affordable sulphite free shampoo in the UK but have found a shampoo bar which isn't specifically for dreads but looks to be similar ingredients to the dreadlockshampoo.com bars.  It's the J.R. Liggett Moisturizing Bar Shampoo and the ingredients are:

Saponified Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil and Rice Bran Oil; Mango Butter, Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Vit. E, Aloe Vera Almond Oil

What are your thoughts on this one until I can afford to order from dreadlockshampoo.com?  Do you think this would be better than the Faith in Nature liquid I am currently using?

You could do what I'm doing right now; I wash my hair with green tea and rosemary, just make a very strong tea, let it cool down, add some sea salt and rinse your hair with that. Then rinse off with cool water. You could also first use saltwater, then rinse with the tea and just leave that in. Soaking could be a good idea for a deep cleanse. The soap you mentioned doesn't seem too bad though, might be worth a try :) Though I don't know about soap, oils are alright from what I've read so far, but soap might get into your dreads?

Growing my roots, a personal and spiritual journey.

I thought it would be a good idea to record my progress here. I say 'roots' and sometimes 'jaata' instead of dreadlocks, just so you know :) Jaata is a sanskrit word meaning locked hair. My reasons for growing my roots are spiritual, first of all to let go of my physical appearance because that has caused me great harm in the past and secondly to feel more connected to this world and everyone in it. Another reason is more of a social thing, dreadlocks have been worn by people as a form of rebellion and I've already been rebellious enough, I think it's time for me to help bring people closer together, just like my hair will knot and intertwine, I want to help this world doing the same because there is a lot of suffering happening in the world right now and people seem more divided than ever so I'd like to do what I can to help bring about change.

I'm freeforming and haven't used shampoo in years, but I'm going to use the dreadlock shampoo soon (it's waiting for me at my mother in law's place, we're moving very soon so all of our mail is going there right now).

Anyhow, I hope ya'll enjoy seeing my hair change as much as I do.

Here are some pics from when I just started:

And these were made a few days ago, around the first month mark, sadly my very first 'super tangle' is gone now but I'm sure others will come back to take his place;
