Question for you natural dreadies

General Talk

Just to clarify I don't cut all of the loops. I've only cut maybe 1 or 2 loops from right at the end of a dread where it was getting way too wide/leafy or however you want to describe it. I guess I was at that stage where I was thinking they were just turning into a knotted mass and I hadn't accepted at that point that it was the path to dreads. I do very minimal maintenance to my dreads now, I don't bother palm rolling or anything like that. I think the last major thing I did was pull 2 nearby dreads through each other as 1 was particularly flat and the other one was the right size to round it off if it dreaded in. Congo-promotion perhaps? It's dreaded into it now so all new growth will be 1 dread and it splits further down into the 2 separate ones!

Question for you natural dreadies

General Talk

It took a few weeks for the first couple to form but probably the best part of a year+ to actually all dread. Been about 20 months now without combing and definitely dreads. Don't wax or do anything. Just keep separating and maybe try and catch anything too loopy/splitting if you don't like it. Probably bad advice but you can cut little parts out of your dread, it does make them weaker but sometimes it is the only option!

Who else had/has to deal with people telling them they should get their dreads done "properly"?

General Talk

I get it occasionally, only from people who don't know that by not combing your hair is the proper method! Any one else get this sort of input from friends/randoms?

pulling through loops?

Dreading Methods

Oh well, what's done is done. Cheers for the input, will refrain from further loop-pulling-through-age.

pulling through loops?

Dreading Methods

Yeah that is kinda what I was doing but it wasn't near the root, it was a loop half way down but I think it's a bit late now to undo. I didn't use a latch hook or anything though, just stuffed the end through the particularly obvious loops and pulled down, sort of creates a knot around the dread where the loop was.

pulling through loops?

Dreading Methods

dunno if anyone else has done this but (like probably most of you) my hair got kinda loopy, and some of the loops were pretty large. basically what i did was take the bottom of the dread and thread it through the loop, and pull it tight so the loop is now around the dread, think its helping one of my particularly f(l)at dreads round out. wondering if anyone else has done this and what the result was? is this recommended? will it stop the dreading process slightly? i felt the loop was too large and that it was unlikely to be sucked back in any time soon

flat dreads?

General Talk

I know a lot of people have said stuff about this before, but I can never find a definitive answer. What is the best way to get a flat dread to round out? I have one particularly stubborn dread which is very flat and I don't like it too much, I think it's from where I sleep on it but at the root it is very flat. I've tried to round it out by putting little bands around to encourage it to stay together but it doesn't appear to be working too well, if I leave them on long enough it will stay roundish for a couple of days maybe but then it will just return to being flat again. Any ideas? It's at the front too so I don't want to wrap it in something and it be really obvious. Also not sure what category this should be in so sorry if it's the wrong one!

backcombing vs. twist and rip

Dreading Methods

Backcombed dreads look like shit after a decent amount of time, as they will be pretty uniform and even at the end, then the bit near the root will dread naturally and be all loopy/bumpy. I might suggest backcombing a bit near the top to help it section (if you're really set on it) then letting it lock up naturally, maybe a bit of TnR here and there to help speed it up if you feel its not going fast enough/you want to see some progress. If you TnR 1 dread every other day then eventually you will have a pretty much full head of dreads that will look pretty damn good (hopefully) as time goes on, none of the initial 'Sideshow Bob' and the eventual 50% natural, 50% really fat, round and uniform (lengthwise that is).
