Um, tbh, the best way to start out depends on you.If your impatient or need to look professional for work:I'd put twist and rip over the likes of backcombing and crochet hooks (is that how you spell it lol.) The hook rips hairs apart and to pull in one loose hair your probably destroying hundreds more. Backcombing, well theres little scales on your hair and your going back against them, damaging the hair, and your hair sticks up every + can hurt like hell.TnR - Twist and Rip - You just twist a section of a hair and split in two at the top so the knot moves to bottom, keep repeating till its at the tip of hair.If your growing for spiritual reasons or have time and patience:In this case, natural is best. Very little maintenance and you have a great journey. Just stop combing/brushing. You can use any shampoo - no conditioner; but you should really have residue free shampoo, so the residue doesn't build up. People also separate the dreads if they start to kind of eat each other (or congo as it's called) when they're dreads are at the thickness they want.Hope this helped, Peace.

it's all a matter of opinion. Read around the site, check out peoples time lines and decide for yourself.

Regardless of how you start your dreadlocks, they will continue to mature with time as your hair continues to go through its normal growth/shedding cycle. In the end you have to be patient with yourself.
