Welcome to the community Zack. Stay away from crochet hooks, they are the most damaging thing you can do to you hair, same as wax, stay away from both. You have just started your journey one month ago and have many more to go. Dreads can take 1-2 years to mature. During the first few months, they will loosen, loop, zig zag and look a little crazy at times. This is the sections shrinking up to become mature dreads, it is a process that needs to happen. Real dreads are not instant. The back combing sections you made are not dreads yet, they are the roadmap to your dreads. You gotta sit back and allow them to do their thing. Any interference on your part will set back the dreading journey each time you try to maintain them. A crochet hook breaks each section into hundreds of little pieces and one day you locks WILL start to fall off/ break off because there will be no long strands left to give it strength.

All you need to do is wash them 2-3 times a week and separate any sections that are trying to join together, that's it....So sit back and just enjoy your journey...don't rush it...allow them to grow healthy so that you are able to keep them for life if you so choose. Soaring Eagle, who created this site for us, has had dreads for 23 year now, no hooks, just cleanliness and love to them....it's that easy.....Peace

Welcome. What soaps are you trying? Not all natural soaps are good for locks. Most have too many conditioners that prevent locking. And others leave too many residues
