Hi Will, welcome to the site. Washing with regular soap will leave a buildup of residue inside the dreads. You can purchase a dread soap or use a baking soda touch-less wash. For the baking soda wash, mix 1/2 baking soda to 5 cups water, pour on head and leave on for 20 minutes, no scrubbing. then rinse well. Next pour on 1 capful of apple cider vinegar mixed with 5 cups water and leave on for 1 minutes, then rinse. At the end of oyur shower, rinse your head with as cold water as your can take, it helps seal the pores on the scalp. Info & recipes can be found on the dreaducation section found at the top of page.
Finger rolling and palm rolling is UN-necessary and may do root damage by the twisting of hairs when you do that. Other than keeping the sections separated, you should not be touching the forming dreads.
Since you have been using regular soap, give your head a long soak in the tub, immersing it under water to help get out all the old soap. Cheers & Happy Dreading

Welcome. Barrellady's right about the normal soap. It will cause major problems down the line if you keep using it.
I know she meant to say it, but the "1/2" means 1/2 cup BS to 5 cups water.

Welcome. I'm glad you were dissapointed with how they first turned out. Most gels only cause problems.
