Welcome. It's great that you stopped waxing, but it's still not enough. Even a little wax can cause huge problems down the line. And wax will NEVER wash out in normal soap and water. It is a hydrocarbon, and needs a detergent and lots of scrubbing to get it out. If not, it'll just migrate it's way into the core of your locks, and can cause mold, mildew, and rot to form inside.
As for root rubbing... It does nothing to help. In fact, it's pretty much like rubbing your scalp with a brillo pad. It thins out your roots and makes your locks weak and brittle.
Along with that, palm rolling only does 1 of 2 things. If you don't do it often, it won't create any lasting knots. It just makes them look a bit neater for a few hours. If you do it enough to see progress, it will severely destroy your roots. I did it for 2 weeks, daily, and 6 years later, I am still trying to fix the damage:
Welcome Wildflower Faerie. You are looking for a dread soap and can find them @ dreadlockshampoo.com, These are naturally made and great for hard water. Dr.Bronners does not rinse out well with hard water and may leave a residue over time. There is a map on this web site if you do not know your water type: soft vs. hard. .
Palm rolling and root spinning may cause long term damage to your dreads. Baba Fats knows first hand about this, some of his fell off. Spinning the roots is only weakening the roots, which may cause hairs to pull out of the scalp.
All you need for dreads, if you want them to last a lifetime, is to wash, separate and then enjoy the journey, that's it. Glad you did not feel aligned with the bees wax, did you get it out yet?, Dawn dish soap is good for that.
Any questions after reading the dreaducation page, feel free to ask, we are here to help you keep your dreads for life. There are home recipes on the dreaducation page for washing dreads
Welcome. It's good that you only crocheted to start, and not as a maintenance. It is the second most destructive rumor that has been spread through the dreadlocks community. So now that you've stopped, if you still have the hook, either trash it, or learn to crochet, so you don't feel bad about dropping however much on a product that was only ever designed for arts and crafts
If you want dreads for years to come, or to last you a lifetime, then no more hooks! If you wanted instant dreads to last you only a couple of years, and you are aware of what the hook does, then don't feel guilty on your choice. Go for it but know that they will/may eventually break off.
Whatever you do from herein, just enjoy your dreadie journey.....Peace
