Welcome. Definitely keep staying away from products. They will only hurt your progress.
As for palm rolling. it only does 1 of 2 things. if you don't do it much, it won't create any lasting knots. it'll just make them look neat for a few hours at a time. If you do it enough to see progress, it will severely damage your locks:
There is no real way to give your locks a "good jump start". Even with back combing, they are likely to untangle when you wash them. This is OK. In fact, it's better. They need to unravel in order to retangle in a healthier way. Don't try to force them back in by back combing again. Just let it ride and in a few months they will start coming together and staying there. If you keep trying to put them back in, it just starts the process over again
Welcome Angye. You came to a wonderful community for all your dreading needs. I see you are using Dr. Bronners, check to see if you have hard water, as it leaves a residue if it is. When using baking soda as your wash, you should give a rinse with apple cider vinegar to balance your hairs PH from the baking soda, it is also a conditioner.
Have fun and enjoy your new journey in life. Peace
