Roots need to be loose, if they were tight they would pull on the scalp when moving around. So don't worry about them. Loose hairs will eventually be fed into the dread. You are only 1 year in, they are not yet mature, so they are still on their journey.
If you don't like the loose hairs you can always do a criss cross wrap with embroidery thread. Just lay the loose hair alongside the dread and then wrap it. You can choose embroidery thread the same colour as your hair to not be noticable or you can add pizzazz. The criss cross wrap still allows the hair to finish maturing, as it is not tightly wrapped all around the dread. There is a video on here that shows how to do it.
Craft stores, sewing stores and dollar stores sell the embroidery thread.
Rubber bands are never good for dreads. The heat of washing will make them go gummy and sticky. They can be swallowed by the dread, forever rotting inside. They can damage the section causing a weak spot where they are.
Welcome. It's great that you don't use products, but crocheting is much worse than products. With detergents and scrubbing, you can wash wax out. But crocheting does nothing to help locks form. It only serves to rip hairs into smaller and smaller pieces, which makes your locks weaker and weaker. With every pass of the hook, more hairs are shredded. Locks have been known to snap in places, and even at the root, leaving bald spots just from crocheting.
All that said, palm rolling is terrible for locks too. If you don't do it often, or hard, it doesn't create any lasting knots. If you do it a lot, it will severely destroy your locks. I only did it for 2 weeks, and 6 years later, I am still trying to fix the damage

Welcome fellow Canadian. Peace
good and yea u shouldnt use it at all
welcome but gotta warn u crochets extremely bad for them (and palm rollingfs pointless)
crochet recovery takes a very long time even if they were only crochetted once
the more times u crochet the more severe the harm and the longer recovery takes
