hey everybody! Let's discuss...shampoo!!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

So I have been doing lots of research trying to find a shampoo that will work best for me. I have hard water at my place and I cannot afford to get a water softener.. I have heard excellent things about dreadlocksshampoo... but I don't currently have a debit card, and I just don't really want to order shampoo online every time I need it. I own Dr. B's but it doesn't quite work in hard water. I also bought this non residue nutrogena stuff but it completely stripped my hair of all it's natural oils, so that's off the list. Currently, I'm washing my hair at my boyfriends place because he has softer water, and I'm using baking soda/apple cider vinegar w/ some tea tree in the baking soda. However, in the research I've done baking soda can weaken the hair because your hairs natural pH is around 4-5 and bs has a ph of 8! So using it drastically alters your hairs pH very quickly.. then applying apple cider vinegar (with a ph of 2-3) drops it back down so fast..which also damages hair. I have read the same thing about Castile soap.

So, I really don't know what to use. I want to wash my hair with something that will not strip my hair of it's natural oils (pH balanced) but also something that won't leave a residue. I do not mind having to only wash my hair at my boyfriends because I only have to do so twice a week, so the hard water is not that much of an issue for me.

I found this recipe online but i'm not sure if it would leave a residue.

If anyone knows, that would be much appreciated! Also, if anyone has other recommendations I would love to hear them. (: Thanks all!!!

3.5 months, little progress

Dreading Methods

You can do a sea salt spray! just get some sea salt at a store and mix with water in a spray bottle. spray in hair like 30 minutes before a shower! just make sure to get salt without iodine :)

Non-supportive family

Life Issues Facing Dreads

My family is mostly conservative and has a pretty narrow mind about lifestyles. I, on the other hand, advocate for alternative lifestyles and question anything/everything I hear about. They believe everything they hear on TV... Its just very frustrating when you live in a house with no one who is like minded as yourself.

Yesterday me and my sister were swimming and she brought up my dreads. She basically went off saying how disgusting it is for someone to do with their "healthy hair". She was saying that dreads are dirty, unhealthy, and I will never get a real job with them, going on about split ends and how I can't trim my hair. So pretty much spewing off all the different misconceptions. I tried to explain and educate her but she is the type of person who wont listen or change her opinion. This really offended me.. and made me quite sad. I simply don't feel accepted by my family. I am considered a "paranoid hippy" to them. Soo as you could guess, I don't particularly enjoy being home very much. And then they complain that I am never home...well would you want to be around people who are constantly criticized? No, i'm sure they wouldn't like that.

I'm at a point in my life (19yrs) where I am beginning to make my own choices, and I just wish they could accept that. She thinks this a "phase" and I will want to comb them out after a year or something which isn't true at all. I plan to keep them for as long as possible, and the reason I am doing it in the first place is not for the look. I want dreads to be comfortable with my natural self because I have struggled with insecurities, I also want them for spiritual reasons.. They just don't understand where Im coming from or where I want to go.

All I can really do is stay true to myself. There is no pleasing others in this type of situation.

Im just so grateful and happy this site exists, so that I may have the support I need. It shows me that there are people who are like minded to me. Thank you all <33

When does the fizzling stop?

Dread Maintenance

p.s just looked at ur pic. They do no appear frizzy to me, so i do think you might see them differently than others. JUst remeber your hair needs to room and movement to properly dread. Crocheting is harmful to this progress. Embrace messy hair. Embrace your natural self.

Peace brother.. hope i could help

When does the fizzling stop?

Dread Maintenance

Well if you used the crothet hook, your dreads will need to recover, it causes a ton of damage. It can take at least six months to recover. Crotheting your dreads only make them look less frizzing and crazy at first but if you stop they will become even more frizzing then if you had just let them be this is because the broken hairs from the hook loosen, so either way you will have to deal with loose, frizzing hair. Its all apart o the process. Anyways, my dreads are only 4 months old and i have a ton of frizz. I was very self-consious about it like you are now it sounds, but all those hairs will get sucked in eventually, just gotta give it time. You cant rush it. Also, people say you never really stop having loose hair because your hair just keeps growing, and as new hair grows in it has to be a certain length to be sucked into or create a new dread but it will become less noticable and more "dread looking."

shampoo!

General Questions

I use a bar on my hair and it's only been two months since i stopped brushing. Don't kno if it's true but to me it almost feels as if it helps with the tightening!
