My dreadlock timeline

Member Journals and Timelines

So my hair has been knotting up for about 5 or 6 months now. I started off with three, but I loved them so much I just did the rest of my hair. The bottom layer of my hair went through the process extremely fast. The top is having a lot of trouble with loose hair, but oh well. I get frustrated sometimes with how long it's taking, but it seems like my hair is dreading faster than most. I have very thick wavy blonde hair with a natural streak of black. I've never used any sort of product in my hair and I did do some palm rolling for about the first month, but I've quit since then. The majority of them have been back combed, a few are tnr, and I have one cute little neglect dread that I was just going to keep in my bangs, but it didn't feel like being left out so I let it do it's thing. :) (sorry if some of the pics are too big)

This was about 10 days after I backcombed my first six

Made a few more a couple days later

About a month later I had the majority of my head back combed and some twist and rip.

A couple days after I finished dreading up the rest of my hair.

It's been about 2 months at this point? I don't keep track.

My first few dreads about 3 or 4 months into the process

My dreadlocks in the back about 5 months

And my most recent picture taken just a few days ago. :)

Close to cutting off my baby dreads.

Dread Maintenance

Just let them be. Don't spend any money on dreads unless it's for beads or shampoo or whatever. What method did you use? Back combing or tear and rip or....? I've done both with my hair and it takes a lot longer to knot up with back combing. Either method you used should only be done once. Don't use wax either and crocheting is bad as well. 5 months really isn't anything in a dreadlock timeline.

Hi!! :)

Introduce Yourself

I backcombed them. Although I don't think I did all of them tight enough since a lot have pretty much gone back to my normal hair and I'm just going to let that hair go neglect.

Hi!! :)

Introduce Yourself

My name is Bekka, I'm 20 years old, and I'm from a tiny town in Illinois. I gave myself 3 dreads in April out of excitement cause I found out I'm going to see SlipKnot. Then I won tickets to Manson and gave myself a few more and then I said whatever and did the rest of my head. I used to palm roll them like crazy, but now I'm just letting them do their own thing and yeah...I'm getting these crazy loops and swirls and I hated them at first, but every morning I wake up and it's a brand new design. :) Since having them I've had a few different reactions. Most of them are compliments, but I do get plenty of dirty looks and people asking me if I can even wash my hair. I don't have any recent pics of my progress, but this is a pic of me probably like a day or two after I finished them. :D

I can't be the only one who has this question

General Questions

Honestly since I've had mine (hasn't been long, though) the only race to make any type of racist comments towards my hair are other white people.
