Churches agains't Gay's
Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures
Westboro Baptist Church is an example of extremism, and I can't really think of any situation in which extremism is favorable over moderation. By their shocking and controversial behavior, they garner far more media attention than they deserve. I disagree with the Supreme Court's protection of their right to free speech. They not only protest at queer funerals, but also military funerals. IMO, they are just wrong. That being said, I do want to say, from first-person experience, as a lesbian dreadie in a long term relationship in Arkansas of all bible-belt places, my partner and I are comfortable and welcome in our local Episcopal church, as well as our local running club. My partner is a motorcyclist and belongs to a mixed gender, predominantly straight biker club. My point is that we are surrounded and embraced by people of many ethnic, racial and religious/spiritual backgrounds, and we are openly gay. I'm just plugging that most churches are not hate-mongering, nor are most people. Unfortunately, the media does enjoy whipping up divisiveness and frenzy, and Westboro is perfect fodder for that.

I hate to say but there is so much wrong with religion. In it's purist form religion is a great idea. It gives youpurposeto life, whether your are aChristian,BuddhistMuslimor spiritual believer it is there for good. It's a belief we have to push us to become the best person we can be. One could argue that religion is there to set yourself goals andboundarieswhich we all have in our lives. It's a shame people choose to abuse the purist form of all religion. I'm going to throw it out there, and feel free to correct me but I don't believe there has ever been a religion created to harm other people. And what these priests are doing makes me sick. It's hurtful and it needs to stop.
I'm a true spiritual believer and I believe that we can shape this world to be humane, compassionate and loving! Talking about current issues like these are essential to get our words out.
Peace!
