your hair looks really short, if i was dreading my hair as short as yours i would do neglect, so dont wory if your back combed bits fall out :)

and as SE said, do not croche or wax them unless you want shit dreads that take more time to maintain than you get to spend enjoying them

Does putting hait in pony tail slow down dread process?

Dreading Methods

im a senior computer engineer for a small company (about 11 employees + our boss) but we have clients that are extremely rich an also alot of huge buisnesses. i find that the people that i meet through work find it amazing that i have dreads and it gives them something to talk to you about during the 30+ hours you spend with a person one random week fixing their servers n stuff.

@op: i currently wear my hair back in a dread wrap and it looks great. hides thr roots and shows off the good bits and makes it look all neat and tidy :) if you can get away with wearing one of these i can give you a link to a great supplyer i use to buy mine from.

I also work at a job were I felt uncomfortable with the early stage of dreading hanging out. As soon as they look more dready and less "Oh My GOd What Happen TO Your Hair" i will let them out. I have alway worn a tam from time to time to work so the tam was the solution for me. Look neat and keepspeoplewondering what going on.

Ok, so I don't have dreads YET...

Dreading Methods

yo, i done T&R myself including the back. just turn your head to the opposite side and do them that way - doing left side look left and do them over your right shoulder - (your neck will get sore as fuck after 2/3 dreads so switch to the other side) for the center back put your head as far forward as you can and do them pointing to the ceiling. i done 1 half of my head 1st and kinda fucked it up on one bit as i screwed over the sectioning a fair bit but i like how its going to turn out :)

neglect would be alot faster (years probably) than braids.

also for your neglect question, wash it with salt water and baking soda, if you dont want them to smell like crap you can put some natural essential oils into your soda wash and it will smell alot better. personaly i just use natural soaps and salt water to wash my dreads and they smell all different scents all day (currently a citrus+weed mix lol)

my only advice is don't go for rounded dreads, avoid wax and crocheing and dont aim for perfect looking dreads. you will be dissapointed in the outcome and the ammount of time you will have to spend on your hair every day as they look nowhere near as good as well cared for dreads and if you are happy with them it makes is even better :)

gl on your dreadlock journey

Thank-you! Wow, you reply so fast, that's awesome..=] But yeah, the only person I knew who tried braiding first was Hawaiian, and he gave up before they dreaded as well..The only reason I asked is because I'm hoping for dreads that are at least somewhat the same size..I'm really leaning toward t&r, but dont really have anyone to do the back for me..
and I know different people have different results with the neglect method, but for some reason I feel like it would take forever for my head to look like anything other than a rat's nest..lol..
but for neglect, I'm assuming you wash it too, just dont brush it out after..but how often should I wash and what would be best to wash with? I tend to have a dry scalp with decent bit of dandruff...

but tnr is a good option the few ppl i saw try braids to dread africansd had some luck others well ive seen em give up b4 it dreaded altho it can wwork its a slow method probly slower then neglect since it is neglect buyt 1st they have to unbraid

natural doesnt always take patience often they dread wayt faster then u expected

lol dude i have been ripping my dreads, but unlike most people i dont like neglect dreads. and the picture in this thread was taken close to the end of a 3 day binge on weed, bass and drink. honestly think i cared about seperating my dreads during this time? i advise you quit tryna judge people you have no idea who they are
my dreads are now completed so get over it alrdy

Ya dude you take two forming dreads, hold tight and rip apart. NOTE: a pair of testes is required in most situations

yah but i didnt want half a head of neglect and half a head of TnR dreads thats my point. i let the hair section its self at the bottom while i brushed the rest of the hair that i hadnt done t&r on cus my hair would look dodgy.

also soaringeagle, why try and bash what everyone else does? it seems its your way or no way here

I'm so confused! Doesn't everybody need to separate no matter what method they choose? I know a lot of dreadies, mostly natural/neglect but I've recently met quite a few who backcombed or t & r theirs and they all had to keep the sections separated once the real progress started. I always thought that seperation of knotting sections was part of the dreading process no matter how they began, except maybe if you used crochet or wax to start? Doesn't everybody's try and join up, at least at the roots, at some point of progression?

because if u had seen my hair before dreads you would realise that the all natural aproach would turn my hair into 1 dread, i had extremely frizzy/curly hair that matted into 1 clump if i didnt brush it for 48 hrs.

pic of my hair b4 dreads:(im on top)

my hair just clumps into 1 clump if not brushed so the left hand side of my head would all of been 1 clump of hair.

as well as that i have a job i have to look presentable for, neglect dreads dont look to good in the office.

LET ME PUT IS AS SIMPLE AS I CAN

i had only t&r'd half of my head, the other half wasnt touched. i kept the other side brushed apart from at the roots to let it section its self. i then finished the other half of my head 3 months later (which was still just normal hair)

1 SIDE OF MY HEAD WAS DREADS THE OTHER SIDE WAS NOT it really isnt that hard to understand!
