My dread progression!

Member Journals and Timelines

Woohoo! I thought this was going to take forever. Which would have only made it more worthwhile. Are you sure you're not seeing the dreads I already have? There's three in there, and they've been there for 2-ish months now from t&r.

Day 9

This is day 9 of my natural dreading from straight hair. I took these pictures right after I took my hair down for work.

Thank you! Is putting my hair up going to affect the process much? I've been curious. Would it be better to put it in a ponytail, or bun?

My dread progression!

Member Journals and Timelines

This is day three or four of doing nothing to my hair, except putting it up when at work. It's really hard to not run my fingers through it like I always do, but I'm excited for dreads to start forming, so it's all worth it. I still may end up doing t&r method, but I figured I should give neglect a try first.

Any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated! I still don't really know what I'm doing. I also dye my hair, and am not sure how that will go with dreads. I'll probably just stop.

Okay. Now I'm ranting.

Judgemental people.

Introduce Yourself

I want to try just natural, but I have very fine, pencil straight hair, so maybe twist and rip. That's how I did the three I have.

If I start with twist and rip fort an inch or so, will they form the rest of the way, or just unravel? Because I don't want them crossing a whole lot. I have random other stands wrapped into my dreads, and they always get pulled because it's not supposed to be there.

Thank you all!

Thank you! This definitely helped, and just plain brought a smile to my face!

A push off of the edge of the cliff is exactly what I was looking for. It's settled. My dreads start now. Any other handy tips?

Introduce Yourself

I really want to dread my hair, but everyone around me is telling me it's a bad idea. I know they think dreads are dirty and don't understand. And I know I should just do it anyways, because it's MY hair and not theirs, but I can't help but be discouraged. I mostly just need someone to talk me IN to getting dreads. I already have three and I LOVE them.

Thinking of dreading, yet unsure.

Introduce Yourself

What shampoo should I use? Or how should I wash my hair?

Another thing, when I'm on this site I hear a noise like bloo-BLOOP! What is that?

Thank you! This is helpful. I did one tiny little last night using the t&r method, and I love looking down and seeing it there.
It's quite a frizzy dread, however, and in some spots it's much looser than most of it. This sounds pretty normal judging by what I've read on here, and I'm assuming it'll change?

i have soft, fine hair too. it took a lot of time for my hair to start to knot naturally. i'm happy with how its finally doing it but knowing what i know now with how my hair hates to knot i probably would've t&r my hair after it naturally sectioned itself a couple months in. t&r is the least damaging of the starter methods and probably the easiest to remove if you have second thoughts. you put it in using your hands and you can undo it using your hands too. no comb or harsh tools required. maybe do a couple and see how you like it. if it's not for you then just unravel them and move on:)
