ACV/Drying/Darkening Dreads?

Dread Maintenance

I guess black tea alone doesn't do much from what I've read, unless it's mixed with henna.

ACV/Drying/Darkening Dreads?

Dread Maintenance

My hair is sort of a dirty/dark blonde. In the spring/summer it lightens up quite a bit.

ACV/Drying/Darkening Dreads?

Dread Maintenance

For the ACV rinse, how many tablespoons should be used? I've heard a splash all the way up to 1/3 of a cup...It makes my hair pretty soft if I use 1/3 of a cup.

How dry do you have to get your dreads after washing? I typically wring them out, wrap them in a towel for 15 mins. and then blowdry on a low setting till every last drop is out...is this necessary, or can I just get them 90 percent dry and let them air dry?

What's the best way to darken my hair?

The Fact Of The Matter.

Introduce Yourself

I had backcombed locks for 2 years and to tell you the truth they looked like they were 'made'. My new neglect dreads are so much more beautiful and you can rip them however you want. They form based on what's natural for your head. I don't mean to sound snobbish, but they are coming along much better than backcombed, at about a third of the time thus far.

Your hair is going to be a mess no matter what method...you have to surrender and let the craziness take control of head. Like anything in life that's worth waiting for, it takes time.

Im begining to hate my hair

Dread Maintenance

Yeah, cold water is a must. I find that my locks form from the tip or towards the end, not the root...Backcombed was a different story, though.

Ok. What are you washing with first of all? I would reccomend a baking soda/sea salt mix and then an ACV rinse, followed with as cold of water you can stand to close your scalp pores and to close the cuticles. Next, I would put a wool sweater on your pillow. I don't really think they can progress any faster than that...at least in my experience. Ever since I put all these elements together my hair has been matting more than usual.

Like you, my dreads have formed in the front first and the rest is sorta matted, but only looks like baby dreads, or loose mats, aside from a few dreads on the sides/back. Idk, at almost 7 months, they're still a bit young so I wouldn't lose hope. If they are getting the proper care, they should be on their way.

almost brushed it all out :(

Dread Maintenance

no problem. i would also reccomend an old wool sweater on your pillow if you've got one. i can tell you that my dreads weren't any further along than yours @ 4 months. Hang in there, they will knot more and more, especially since your hair is so long.

I was told on here that washing more often helps dread faster. Think about it, the more movement the better. I would also reccomend to you to do a cold rinse at the end to help seal your scalp pores and cuticles of your hair (keeping dirt out).

Tips For Optimum Dreading?

Dread Maintenance

Thanks for the clarification.

Z, that is true if you are ditching shampoo. However, right now while you are starting to dread is a bad time to begin that process because the regular washing helps your hair tangle. If you want to go no-poo wait until you are all locked up, then move to training your scalp for infrequent cleansing.

I've heard the opposite, that progressively stretching out the time between washes causes your scalp to produce less oils...makes sense, because your hair is being stripped less and is being acclimated to not having to replenish those oils as often. that's why I had worked my way to once every week - two weeks.

Z i would say three times a week minimum,if you want to experiment with my suggestion. A theory of mine is that washing more often helps reduce the natural oils in your hair which is part of what keeps hair tightening and locking in the first place..and the water combined with organic soap/shampoo just seems to help the process. Also, when i rinse with cool water i shake my head about some under the shower spigot.

Seriously i had more progress in two weeks of doing this then i did in three weeks previous.
