peyote sleeves :)

Dread Accessories

Thank you! I'm pretty excited about getting started and have been trying to find some sort of hobby. I'm sure i'll probably just start with some easy stuff first to get the hang of it like you said :) it seems like you're pretty passionate about it! it's refreshing to come across passionate people :)

Hey Jessica! Peyote stitch is really easy to learn, it just takes some practice. Google "peyote stitch tutorial" and you'll find all kinds of great instructions.

You'll probably want to start off with really simple patterns at first -- like stripes or diagonal bands. It will help you get used to the technique, because you can see how the beads are spaced out.

You can find some free starter patterns on the net, just google around. Or check your library for beading books. Or you can make your own (I design all my own patterns, it's half the fun!) but if you decide to use/copy a pattern or design that doesn't specifically say "free use" then it's good karma to contact the designer and ask to use it. Bead artists get pretty upset when our work is copied, because designing patterns takes a lot of work. :-) Good luck!

Dread Maintenance

Thanks! xD ima just let em do their thing

Yup, 2 months is way too early to be thinking about "fixing" anything. Just keep separating and they'll catch up eventually. Most of mine locked up at different rates too.

leave em be theyre 2 months old in another 6 months that gap will shrink alot and be closer to an inch

if u do sea salt sprays that helps if u sleep on a wool pillowcase or wear a wool tam that helps
but mostly u just gotta give em time

Is there anything that will help my roots lock up?

Dread Maintenance

My right side and back are the worse. Some dreads have about 3 to 4 inches of root that haven't locked up yet. My dreads are a little over 2 months old. And it's kinda hard tell what loose hair goes to what roots. I don't really do much with them besides separating the roots when they congo. Should i still just leave them be or is there something i can do to help them lock up? I hear rubberbands are bad cuz they weaken the hairs and cause them to break. Thanks!

has anyone had really good luck with the backcombing methodd

Dreading Methods

I've only had mine for about two months and i used the back combing method. The only prob i have is all the loose hairs and some days they don't seem as tight as other days but they're all still in tact! i'm actually really happy about the way they look and haven't really had to do much besides keep my roots from congoing. Hope this helps...even just a little :)

Woo! Thank you! I live about 45 minutes away from orland so I'll prob just go there since their mall is wayyy better than mine in Bourbonnais haha i was just hoping to find one of those tiny shops tucked away in the corner somewhere in all those strip malls in that area. I remember going to this psychic shop in tinley when i was in high school and they had a lot of cool stuff there but it must have closed :( I was hoping to find some of those healing stones as well. Those sound bad ass! xD Thanks again for your help!

i live pretty close to you :) im in joliet (shittiest mall in illinois probably) and i still find stuff for my hair in this mall. you kinda just have to be creative. go to your 'hippie' store in the mall. i think orland mall has like 3 lol we have a place called hot rags here, and look at the rings and bracelets and things. i just found a bracelet that worked perfectly for a dangle in my hair. i dont think ive found anything for my dreads that actually says theyre made for dreads.. i just keep my eye out for things that works. i even found stuff at clairs. i would assume head shops would possibly have some stuff that could work too, im planning on going to the ones around here in the next week. good luck though!

General Questions

There isn't much diversity in my town when it comes to dread shops. I was really wanting to purchase some dread beads or peyotes sleeves (maybe make my own) but i really want some authentic looking stuff. I would rather purchase them in a store rather than online so my question is: are there any dread shops/all natual stores in the tinley park/orland park/chicago heighs, IL area?? I live about 2 hours south of chicago so i'm tryin to keep it closer but if i have to i would be willing to visit the city. Or what sort of keywords would i type into a search engine. i've tried 'dreadlock shops' 'dreads' 'dread beads' etc...and nothing really came up around my area besides hair salons :( thanks for any help!
