lemme know how...

Dreads and Diets

yah pretty much SE gave you most of the tips. ive also noticed if you use shampoo or conditioner, you can mistake the residues and micro-oils they leave behind to make the shine/strength/smell as natural oils from your hair. try washing with baking soda a time or two and we'll see if its your head's oils or what youve been using in it for your entire life without thinking. you might just find youre not as oily as you may think :P and no, water only doesnt count, you need an agent like BS to dissolve and break up whats there before you can make an accurate product-free judgement.

Worried About Separation Or Lack Of..

Dread Maintenance

well im going to offer my opinion, people may not like this because of my views on scissors but its just my opinion, not my advicemy head has always had a layer of webbing to a degree. for the most point i just leave it if i cant separate it by pulling dreads apart. if its really bad ill try to split hairs with my fingers or snap some with my fingers. in the event of a few bad congos, ive been known to take a small pair of scissors to the area and carefully cut hairs 2-5 hairs at a time, making ABSOLUTELY SURE i know which hairs im cutting before i snip. i personally feel that if you know what you're doing with scissors and triple check your work before snipping, its a lot less strain on everything around and connected to it especially if you're dealing with a fragile area. if separating doesnt work and and i can tell ripping would cause a problem after attempting it, i usually resort to the scissors. just make sure you dont cut very much hair at once, less than 10 hairs at a time.a lot of the danger with scissors is accidentally cutting something you shouldnt/dont want to. ripping is generally better due to the hair telling you where it wants to separate rather than creating a clean, manufactured cut through it in an unnatural pattern. in my experience cutting very few hairs at a time avoids that for the most part. basically just use common sense with your technique and you should be fine.just my opinion but i wanted to get that out in case you decided to try scissors for yourself.usually though a bit of webbing isnt much of an issue, as the dread grows a bit of webbing will eventually easily snap when you pull dreads apart to separate.

I got stuck on my dog's tie out...

Dread Maintenance

try pulling on it and massaging it, trying to work out the tension creating the scrunch effect. it used to happen to me a lot when mine were new and i could always just extend the dread back out again by finding the tension and releasing it (not breaking hairs!)

wrapping dreads while sleeping

Dread Maintenance

it depends. a tam can distribute the pressure of you sleeping on them a little more evenly, and a wool tam can help create knots sleep or awake, but generally wrapping them ends up with you waking up with whatever you wrapped them in on the floor or by the pillow. theres not really an advantage or disadvantage to it, its just a matter of preference and comfort. but usually sleeping without wrapping leaves you more a little more knotty when you wake up

7 months - loose hair questions (i know - ugh not another one)

Dread Maintenance

@ SE, its not as bad as it sounds, theres about 5 inches of free space above my head with it, doesnt really even touch the hair, i just leave it on as a screen to distribute the force of the water. i tried it because the dial doesnt have a water speed/amount/pressure dial, just temperature and it needs to be either max hotness or max coldness (almost frozen) for any sort of normal water pressure. in the mild temp ranges the only option is full-on firehose and it was responsible for tearing up the sectioning that it was grouping into during a lot of showers. i'll go back to showering without it though, i dont want to mess them up even more

also, if you're meaning the back of my head, i had been dying my hair black for about 6 years and its not really congoed, but the natural brown hair color has grown out and the camera doesnt really pick up the individual dreads that well once the hair blends from black to brown

7 months - loose hair questions (i know - ugh not another one)

Dread Maintenance

so im now at 7 months in, and im having some loose hair issues. its only on the right side of my head too for the most part. i have been attempting to get the hairs to dread for about 3 months now but they just want to section and not dread, then lose the sections later on and start over. i wouldnt worry about loose hair, and normally i dont because i know its normal and its never going to stop, but i have enough for literally 5 medium thickness dreads lining one side of my head, and more on the right side on the back of my head.

Recently ive been doing the panty hose over my head thing in the shower to help lessen the impact from my showerhead, its one of the ones that sprays a harsh stream of fast water like a jet to simulate what seems to be a waterfall or fire hose lol. its helped it keep the sections a little bit, i have also started sea salt sprays again to try to help it out, but it just doesnt seem to be happening.

I have included some attatched photos, maybe somebody could help me out. Ive tried putting beads on them and the few times i can actually get a bead onto them they dont stay once i go to bed, and i dont want to have to resort to hair elastics, but its driving me crazy. i have a feeling its the reason why ive been shot down in a lot of recent job interviews and such. not the dreads, but the messiness of one half of my head.

Dready head and a Fruitarian body = a perfect philosophical fit

Dreads and Diets

i agree, our bodies only run as well as the fuel we provide for it. i just wish healthy foods werent so expensive to get. those of us living on food stamps having to ration every bit of food we buy, it can get really difficult to eat healthy. the most unhealthy, processed, freeze dried crap is so cheap while organics and wholesome foods are so much more expensive. Im guilty of not eating well myself, ive lived on a diet of tv dinners and frozen pizzas and pastas for years, but i do try to get some salads and fruits on a regular basis. one of my favorite things to get is blueberry / pomegranite juice (either one or both together), and i noticed at first all the antoxidants would give me bad headaches after drinking it. over time the headaches subsided, i guess your body can tell you if you're not very healthy by the reactions you get in response to healthy foods. its pretty interesting. i dont know what it is about crap food, but its very addicting and very hard to break away from
