I wanted to add to the "natural" discussion :(

Dreading Methods

...just another well meant discussion that ended up like so many others before: dead arguing about words which makes no sense and is nothing more than a waste of time..

i have absolutely the same feeling about it here. i like the advice i found here, and its been so helpful to me, but im naturaly very open minded and welcoming person and cant agree with the 'all natural fundamentalism' i feel its being pushed on people here. i mean, its gone so boring with the constant anti wax, anti crochet, anti whatever here..its good give some advice but i feel like some ideas which i realized through my proces i cant present here because they are not kosher, and it shouldnt be like that.whatever whoever believes, its just hair and one can do whatever he wants with it...and learn from it too...and i dont like judging something i ve never tried too..

dreadlocks journey vs dreads instillation

Dreading Methods

i absolutelly agree with everything said here! ....sometimes (usually) here i get the impression that hair is much more important than people. we dont care what people want, because it doesnt matter, what matters is hair. dont touch it, if u do u ll get a bad feedback here..what im trying to say here, i like this forum, but it will be better if we gain more understanding for a variety in this world.we r here to advice people, not to order them what to do...

Exactly my point -- dreads are already an unconventional hairstyle and it takes a lot of self-acceptance & pride to have them at all, regardless of how they were started or are maintained, or why you wanted them (even if just purely for fashion).

I just don't really see SE's point of lumping people into categories, and trying to assign motivations to their personal preferences & choices. Johnny Clean did the exact same thing in his dreadlocks treaty thing, implying that anyone against the idea of dread wax must obviously be a hippy-dippy type on some cosmic spiritual magic carpet ride, and it really ticked me off. This isn't a black & white world; we're all infinite shades of grey, and I think it's more productive to focus on what unites us -- regardless of our dreading choices -- than about perceived differences. I'm not keen on maintenance or salon dreads either, but if someone makes an informed decision and wants those kinds of dreads, who am I to tell them their path is somehow "wrong" or not meaningful enough, and that they'd be happier if they'd done it differently?

As for anxiety, look at how many frustrated posts we get here from people going the natural/neglect route... and not all of them decide to keep going. :-) Just to keep some perspective.

(Sorry Chewin, I'm not ranting at you... just ranting in general!)

new and looking for dreadmaker

Introduce Yourself

your hair will be messy if u ll go natural, but it depends how much u care, because u have a great hair for natural dreading. it will be good. make sure u keep separating them to a thin sections, because even thinner sections will get thicker with time. with thin i mean half inch or so..also there was a comment about sea water, it doesnt irritate my scalp at all, skin yes, i have to shower but my hair LOVE it. so, it depends on a person, find what's best for your hair, i normally just swim in a sea and i just let it be and maybe wash once in 2 weeks...sea salt is great for dreads..good luck..

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

i have a good experience with baking soda-acv rince and rosemary + tee tree oils in the mix, basically the recipe from this site. generally if you have problem with yr scalp its usually down to what u r using to wash it, so change it and best to something more natural-less chemical, usually more chemical stuff causes more irritation.. and allways wash it when u feel its needed.

Dreading Methods

backcombing is 1000x more painful than ripping sections apart once in a while... i have few backcombed and few twist'n'ripped dreads and i would definitely not backcomb ever again... yes backcombing is a bit quicker but pointless because it will get much more loose so i think its nearly pointless... Jenna Buggle said:
Well, I would use the neglect method, but it can be painful (the ripping) and I have school. I'm a sophomore and even though I dont care what people think, It would still be best to have the process speedy a bit. :) It worked last time. No rubber bands. promise.

Hello in the UK

Introduce Yourself

i told u how i did it in the message before ;) backcomb and t'n'r... dont like backcombing, its painful and fall apart...anyway, natural dreads are not dirty, u have to wash them.... i think if a person has a patience its the best because it lets the hair choose the most confortable place in the dreads, contrary to backcombing, there u make the sections yourself and sometimes its not the best decision...not sure if u know what i mean..so what s the difference between natural and other dreads in your opinion as a 'clean freak'? Gem Winter said:
i ws pretty lucky with my dreads, as i've taken super good care of them! even just with the almost continuous palm rolling to help them mature, nothin too strenuous on my hair. i've seen a couple of people who've had some disasters with the twist + rip method, who im doing tidy-ups on, being the aspiring hairdresser that i am!! I follow my hairdressers methods, although im finding a lot of conflicting advice on here, however, she has had loads of good advice, and i really cudnt have coped with the natural method, im a clean freak!!is that how u did yours? or did you use another method? xx
