Knotty Jonny Clean & baking soda/apple cider vinagar

Dread Maintenance

LMAO, Shiva... Thanks, Paula... I'm at work now, but when I get home to a regular computer I will do that. I could still use some info on the chemical reaction that causes vinegar to clean so well...

I did post that... I'm fairly certain that's the part he was saying required a boiling solution to have the aforementioned chemical reaction. I would LOVE to present some scientific information stating otherwise if y'all have some.

This was Jonny's response:"Except that the chemical reaction that allows baking soda to actually act as a soap requires boiling temperatures. It's actually turning part of the fat or grease that it's cleaning into a soap. (soaponification) Without boiling it removes regular dirt, as in it caries it way, water does the same thing.Vinegar is acidic and kills germs true. It's not going to hurt your dreads although if you don't rinse it completely they will smell until you do. It may clean grease although they don't make any effort to explain how it could do that despite the fact that it's not made up of polarized molecules that could surround dirt and grease molecules and lift them away from the hair/surface as soaps/detergents do.On the plus side it doesn't leave residue so while it may not be the most efficient cleaner it's not sabotaging your efforts by leaving residue. In the end if you don't mind rinsing your dreads with vinegar do it - if it works for you keep it up. Mad props to Amy for digging up those articles.I'll have a good idea of how backing soda and vinegar effect the locking process when I finish up the long term experiement that I'm currently working on...more later =]"

Dread Maintenance

I'm of course speaking only for myself, but I know what's in the products I use and decide to use them anyway. (When I run out of DHHQ soap I may switch to something else.... I have a friend who started making shampoo bars for dreads that she says are working great.) And I think Lock Peppa is the $h*t, but that's just me, I'm sure, LOL. I definitely don't feel like a victim, although I do feel a little betrayed that after trying so hard to see the good in DHHQ, I've been overwhelmingly disappointed overall.

@NaturalWomyn --- It's great to hear you say that because a lot of ppl on the DHHQ facebook page are annoyed because they think I am too anti-product, LOL. I was feeling like I was too product-liking to be here and too anti-product to be there.

Good question.... >.> To which I do not know the answer, LOL. Knottysleeves said:
Also, isn't Johnny officially endorsing that person who sells "magic bath salts" for washing dreads? Her salts are just a mix of bicarb (baking soda), Epsom salt, and sea salt. By his logic, the stuff would give you the same results as washing in a mix of tap water + sea water... so then why is he endorsing them?

I have a WHOLE lot of respect for people who got dreads the natural way (patience and a lot of bad hair days along the way!), but that was definitely not for me. :-) I think nazarian locks are amazing. I just combined a few of mine (down to 38 from 51) and it made some awesome bumps that I absolutely love (because my dreads never really got bump or loopy on their own)!Anywho.... thanks for all the good info everyone!

@Heather -- it's enough proof for me, too, but I know if I were to say something to that effect he would just come back and say that he needs SCIENTIFIC evidence of it, not just my word. *rolls eyes*@NaturalWoymn -- Actually, my opinion of him has been steadily declining... and I've been feeling like I belong among heavy product users less and less. Admittedly, I DO use some of his products (lock peppa and dread soap).... but overall I am more and more disenchanted with him and his company, sadly. The longer I am involved in this community the more I gravitate towards this board, LOL. (SE -- I imagine that's fairly normal, LOL)@SE -- I was hoping to find some specific scientific evidence as I'm too impatient to wait a year to debate the matter with him. I definitely take your word on it, but I know that he won't. Also, on the matter of cancer, you might be interested in reading this page he has up on his website about SLS/SLES (including a link to a PDF file about how SLS/SLES being dangerous is total bull shit)... Here it is: http://www.dreadheadhq.com/dreadlocks-products-ingredients-sles.php

Dread Maintenance

So, I frequent the DHHQ facebook page trying to help out people asking for advice. And one person was saying that it was too expensive for them to make an order for DHHQ Dread Soap and was asking if anyone knew of any cheaper alternative to hold them over until they could afford it. I posted a link to a BS/ACV recipe (based off of the one SE posted here on this forum), and KJC had this to say about BS/ACV:"It's important to note that the apple cider vinegar and baking soda rinses are RINSES and not shampoos/soaps. They do not help water bond to dirt and oil to facilitate it's removal as soaps do. I'm not sure what the long term results of using these rinses in place of shampoo are but in the current experiment I'm doing the rinses seem to have the same effect as tap water. On a positive note they do not appear to leave residue of their own."I KNOW that's isn't true and people (SE in particular whose had his dreads 20+ years) use BS/ACV almost exclusively with only very positive results. In fact, I've heard that it works BETTER than DHHQ soap. I was hoping some one might have some scientific/chemical explanation for how BS/ACV works so I can bring that back to the facebook page to describe why what he's saying is inaccurate...Thanks in advance!

so i got an email today about manicured locs

Dread Maintenance

I am a 'loctician' (for lack of a better term....) and do maintenance for people who want it, but I am also a huge proponent for the free exchange of information and allowing people to make their own informed decisions. I have it clearly on my website that the freeform/natural/patience method is out there and what its benefits are and that only dreadlock products cost money, but dreadlocks are free. My interest in dreads is primarily to make sure people have the information they want and need. If that involves me working on their dreads personally GREAT (because I love the work), but if not, that's fine, too. :-) To me, that's what the spirit of dreadlocks is all about. So should you stop? Absolutely not! (And that's coming from someone who might potentially 'lose profits' because of the truth being known!)
