How do you combine mature dreadlocks?

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Hi everyone,I would say for the most part my locks are matured. Only the top scalp still shows loose hair signs but other than that its been a good 8 years. However, I have found locks getting thinner, mostly I suppose is because of the way I cut my hair, see I kind of cut the sides and around low (not too high up), which is completely unnoticeable when my hair is down. I used to be irritated by loose hair that I used to cut it and I did not know that it is THAT loose hair that is the lock's future. So that's the reason why a very few locks have been getting thinner and thinner. I have only lost 2-3 locks that got so thin, that they just fell off.So how could I combine two mature dreadlocks into one? The ends are mature and locked, however the roots don't seem to be that tight. I see them thinning And I Hope that by combining them I could give them the strength of two and survive. Thanks to all for the reply :)

Frizz ease for frizz?

General Questions

that is an excellent question and answers from fellow members. I too have been wondering about what are the best methods to deal with Frizz. I've been growing my locks for 8 years now and the new hair at the roots is always popping out of place or some will have some loose hairs down the lock. I used some type of dread-gel at a local beauty supply. It has mostly organic ingredients. It's only a temporary solution. and I'm glad I read about how crocheting is bad for dreadlocks.Question, is Johnny Clean's Loose Hair tool basically the same thing as crocheting, about the same or worse?P.S. I try not to let the frizzies bother me but sometimes I just can't help!!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I wanted to ask about your experience. You say you seldom use the ACV wash because your dreadlocks are 2 months old. So is the ACV really not recommended for more mature locks because they might take the knots out?Oh and a general question, How would you wash with just plain baking soda? Would it have to be mixed with water, how much quantity should it be diluted ?Thank You Panterra Caraway said:
Washing your dreads doesn't have to be a big deal...get the BS and ACV and you're good. Unless your scalp goes freaky (which I find the BS prevents) oils aren't a must. I keep a small bucket in my shower...when I get in I put a small cup (in reality about 1/2 a measured cup) in the bucket and as I get wet the bucket fills with water. When full, I mix it with my hand and pour it over my head. Then, after I wash my body I rinse everything well! To be honest, I seldom use th ACV because I am at 2 mos. too and I find it takes out my knots at this point. Baking soda is like $2 for a big box...couldn't be any cheaper or easier.

Going for a job interview today.

General Talk

I have a desk job (on some days) and well I work for a Texas public college, and My dreads are 8 years old. So it depends on the type of environment and job.My guess is that if it was more of a strict-corporate type of job, the dreadlocks would be considered "unprofessional" looking depending on the length I guess.Sucks majorly!!Good luck !!

I miss my dreads so much

General Talk

wow dude I cannot believe that employer said something like that !Last year when I was job hunting I had several interviews and it took me a while until I found a job that I enjoyed and was hired for. Sometimes when I look back I would think about my locks, were they the cause for me not being hired?Haha, possibly no, because of today's unemployment rate, it's a really tough challenging competition. SO I just kept on at it , and even though it took me longer, I am very grateful and humble that I have a job that I feel comfortable with.

Should Dandruff build up so quickly?

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

As for Soaring eagle's story with the doctors, OUCH... Man that does seem like torture!I'm with Davey with the fact that dandruff shampoo's don't really help much. Some will only "tame" the dandruff, but will resurface in 1-2 days. I've even used the stronger one's like T-Gel that have salicylic acid and that would remove the dandruff but leave something that looked like scarring so my headline would have this red scar where the dandruff would've been.So the only solution I found was buying some prescribed shampoo @ Mexico where people don't have money to visit doctors so A LOT of prescribed medicine can be found easily. So yup I had a scalp condition...... And I would love to try these more natural approaches but Man its confusing with all the ingredients and different measurements. One question thought, what is ACV that I keep reading? Davey said:
i've always struggled with dandruff even with straight hair; dandruff shampoos only seemed to make it worse as did dhhq and dr. bronners peppermint liquid soap. today i sit flake free with not itch or irritation or embarassment after one wash.

on saturday i made a strong bs/acv rinse, 3/4 cup bs in a gallon pitcher and a tbs of sea salt and poured it over my head making sure to get all parts of the scalp covered, chilled and smoked a bowl, 15-20 minutes i rinsed with acv, i did a gallon with about 3-4 tbs, sloppy measureing so im sorry it's not accurate, but again, poured over the head slowly to make sure i got it everywhere, chilled for another few minutes while i made one for the girlfriend too then got in the shower to wash it out.

did it for me and my gf and we both liked it better than dr. bs, we're clean and flake free today, and it was much less trouble than tring to wash out the soap. i think i did the acv to strong for our dreads<6weeks and 2 weeks> but we're not complaining at all

I live in TX too i think you'll be k with the dreads but man if you don't want them past your waist then id trim a bit if i was you. It will keep growing so trimming a little bit wont hurt you if you feel personally that you need to.

Nice answer !! Health and well-being should always come first. That's a very important detail you mentioned, about the 1st set of dreadlocks you had.Question for you, When you decided to trim your 1st set of dreadlocks how short did you trim them?I think its because its my 1st time having dreadlocks that makes the decision so difficult. I know after the 1st I wouldn't care about trimming. Knottysleeves said:
Welcome!
Cutting/trimming is a totally personal decision. I had to trim my first set for physical reasons -- I'm prone to migraines, and once my dreads got to a certain length, the weight was just too much for my neck and head. I spent a lot of time fighting the discomfort and trying to find ways to deal with them, and it just wasn't worth it anymore.I know some people have religious, spiritual or other reasons that they'd never cut a dread, and I respect that. But for me, my health and wellbeing always comes first. :-)
