i thought i wanted perfect dreadlocks now i love how unique my dreads are

General Talk

I agree! Who needs perfection, when you can have originality! Why strive to be like everyone else? how will anyone tell us apart? going against the grain is my only goal in life, keeps 'em guessing.I love my dreadlocks, they are so weird :) -which describes me to a tee. and my husband likes to play with them, and his is the only opinion that i even remotely care about.I too wanted johnny's dreadlocks, it was so easy to fall into his opinion. but he can have his dreadlocks. mine look nothing like his. not even a little bit. and every day i love my dreadie babies even more.thank you so much for the post. i have been dreading for 6 weeks now, and have been a member on this site for a week (although feels longer!). i tell anyone who will listen about the site-changed my life!shine dreadies, shine!

Hi, wanted to put my 2 cents in. :)I use baking soda rinse (about 1/4 to 1/2 cup in 1/2 gallon jug)then i use 1/4 cup of acv in a gallon jug and pour it over my head.i think everyone does something different, so you can adjust it to your liking. (maybe 1/8 cup?)after i squeeze as much of it out as i can, i wrap a towel around my head and let it sit there for about 10 min. it gets a lot of the moisture out of my dreads, and you'll notice that they don't smell at all as soon as they are totally dry. (and i have a witness, hubby is obsessed with smelling them for some reason.. tee hee)

YAAAAYYYYY! thank you so much everyone. I just wanted to make sure we were doing the right thing. we are keeping them very clean (washing every 3-5 days), and separating congo's daily (aparantly, my hair loves to dance). I just got in the mood to decorate, and i just made my first sleeve all by myself!like anything brand new, the beginning stages are tough to get through, but i'm really glad i have this website to fall back on, and such wonderful people to respond so quickly.thanks for the great site. without you, i may be bald! lol.

okay, i started my dreads by backcombing (in my defense, i didn't know any better), and it actually worked for my hair. which surprised me cuz i have very thin hair. i have gotten the chance to TnR a few homeless strays, and i love the result so far, but it's really too late to fix my whole head. my problem is i have about 3 inches of undreaded hair at the root. i'm wondering if this is normal? is there a way to fix this, without taking out the whole dread? some look kinda weird, but they are 6 weeks old today-and i know they are still going through stages of tightening, but i have a big ball of knotted hair at the end of quite a few of these dread babies. i just want to make sure i'm still on the right path before it gets too too late to fix 'em. any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hi

Introduce Yourself

I did see your link. my husband found it somehow, and was trying to explain to me that it's okay that my dreadlocks have taken on a lifeform of their own. some are only half dreaded, which was very frustrating to me. anyhoo, he finally walked me over to the computer and sat me down in front of your page-which changed my life! actually, that same day i drove in the car with the windows down and let them blow in the wind. they looked so cute when i got out of the car! so now i have been working on getting the wax out, and letting them hang loose. thanks again..you saved my dreadlocks from any more abuse ;) Sister Rags said:
Hi Jessica : ) It's good to meet you, and bless your husband for his support. That means soooo much. I would like very much to have a partner who *really* understood dreads and the dread journey, but that takes someone who has a certain kind of profound spiritual connection with life, I guess.

( : You're very welcome...but, what are you thanking me for? Did you see my link on FB? However you got here, I'm happy that you're here.

namaste,
sr

Hi

Introduce Yourself

Hello, all. my name is Jessica, and i'm new to the dreadlock world..but very excited. After a few bumps in the road to dreadlock bliss, i was ready to give up today. Hubby found this website and insisted i explore. he was blessed with more patience than i, and has the best view of all the "sweet" dreads in the back of my head. i'm fighting with the ones in front. but today changed all that.. THANK-YOU SISTER RAG'S!I love your approach to dreadlocks, and you have inspired me to love my dreads all over again. I actually love that they are not perfect and no two are at all alike. which definately describes me to a T. I look forward to meeting new people on here, considering we move a lot, and i'm the only person i know with dreadlocks. (so the conversation is a little one-sided) (tee hee) peace!

how to dread

Dreading Methods

Lucky! i braided one of my dreads that were giving me a hard time, and then afterwards found this website that didn't suggest braiding. so when i went to take out the braid, the end dreaded fantastically, and the only way i could have gotten it out was to cut it. so i left it alone. now, the braid has disappeared (somewhere in the dread, i presume?) and i have 4 inches of straight hair-but a sweet knot at the end. lol.. should have left that one ALONE. good luck.. oh, and QUIT TOUCHING THEM! lol.. except to separate from congo-ing Jessica Reyes said:
Yeah I took em out and tnr'd...and now I am officially done touching them...let it be known, I will only wash them and spray them with seasalt from time to time!

ricky williams said:
well you could leave it like that and eventually the tip would be just like the rest although id just undo the braids

Jessica Reyes said:
I braided just the tips cuz they were kind of loos and I wanted them to hold together somehow...I know, sounds silly....but then I twist them and I left it out overnight, slept on em and they're combining already, getting all tangled up, the only thing I'm specifically worried about though is the tips because they're braided are wayyyy thinner than the rest of the dread and I don't want to end up with like....idk, fatties with very large areas of thin ends...idk, I'm just gonna twist and rip, I already have one that's pretty much tight because of tnr...I was most pleasantly suprised
