Partial Dreads

Dreading Methods

Mk yea I had thought of doing 'partials' just having maybe 1-3 and maybe over time adding more who knows. I saw it on the lady in charge of a Goddess Temple where I'm at and it sparked my memory; she only has one that I saw. Perhaps I'll do that instead of all over and just go from there.

Partial Dreads

Dreading Methods

Not sure if this belongs in this thread but here goes...

Partial dreads /partial dreadlocking/what ever you want to call it. In otherwords, having just a couple random dreadlocks in with your natural non-locked hair.

What am I asking? How many of you have done this? Have this? How could you maintain your few dreadies and a whole head of un-locked hair? I have seen a few people with longer hair and poking out here and there are some matured dreadlocks growing amongst their un-locked hair. Thoughts? Opinions? Tips?

Bohemian Goddess Creations

General Talk

(Hope this is the right spot for it)

My store is hosted by ArtFire.com (similar to Etsy) so I had to post it hereinstead of with the spiffy slideshow program.

My store can be found at http://BohemianGoddessCreations.artfire.com

Right now I do 2 styles of custom wire-wrapped dread sleeves. I also have thetwo representatives for each style for sale.

I also sell Yoni pendants, Pocket Goddesses, hemp jewelry, & wire-wrappedshell pendants using shells found at our local NC beaches.

More to come :)

Hello

Introduce Yourself

Thanks everyone for the input. Yea I have only ever done a total of 3 dreadlocks, one the first attempt and 2 the second, if I remember correctly. They were months apart between each attempt and each was taken out after about a week or so. This is the third perm I've ever had, the last one I got about a year and a half, almost 2 years ago. So I go a long ways between doing anything chemical to my hair. I usually get crazy cuts and such but since my last 'do (I could mohawk the top and it had really short hair, not shaved, sides) began to grow out I dyed it with a chemical dye to get my dark brown a lighter shade then went over it in pure 100% body art quality henna to get a pretty auburn. Then I got it permed the end of January. My roots have grown out significantly so I'm going to dye it tomorrow with a 100% natural botanicals black dye then go over it with a red by the same company to kind of highlight it so it's not straight black.Yes, Rags, I am someone to always need to have something to do with my hair. I have known from the get go that dreadlocks is not a style I am willing, or wanting, to keep forever. Maybe a good long while, yes, but not permanently. Unless, of course I love them so much I can't help but keep them ;P But I won't know until the time comes.I would love to finally be able to grow my hair out very long so that I can have it in a zillion braids etc., but I want to try dreadlocks at some point, preferably sooner than later. Then I know if in the future that's a style I'd like to re-try or not. I figured I could start them small while my hair is short and grow them out, then when they get pretty long and I've grown pretty tired of them, getting rid of them- instead of growing my hair long THEN dreadlocking.... Shrugs* I'm just not sure. I'm also trying to get into modeling, and not sure how dreads will affect my success in that field (unless I get into Suicide Girls when I turn 18 *crosses fingers*, then it would be an asset). But I digress. I'll dye my hair tomorrow, then go from there. I've been pondering dreadlocks for close to 3 years now. It's either go for it while I'm not living at home and can get away with it and can give them time to grow and form etc. before I head back home, or wait for a long ass time wondering again, whether to dread or not to dread.)O(Aileen

Yes I am using natural plant-based dyes. (i.e. henna, indigo) CBD Makarov said:

No offense but I feel sad for your hair. You're killing it.

Ok thank you. The method I had used before involved this. You alternate between backcombing and t&r then coat with a very light layer of wax and palm roll occasionally to help them lock up.I'll try this after I dye my hair perhaps. Is it relatively time consuming? Would it go faster with a friend?

Thank you for your advice. Could you direct me towards some information on how to do the t&r method?I'm wanting to be able to grow out my hair very long to be able to have it loose and wavy or braided (many braids) but I've always wanted to try dreadlocks.

Hello

Introduce Yourself

I've been thinking about dreadlocking my hair for a long time. I have attempted singles before, just one here or there, and used the back-combing with Knotty Boy wax, but they wouldn't lock up and after a couple weeks would comb them out after putting up with my mother's complaining and threatening to cut them off. When I did those my hair was about shoulder length an straight (I have caucasian hair). Right now it is permed into a loose white-fro which is roughly 4-5 in long when straightened. The perm is grow out about a half an inch or so and I have henna color grown out about 2 in. I'm dyeing it black with natural dyes then going over it with natural red dyes to highlight it in the next couple days (my natural color is dark brown). I would very much like to attempt to dreadlock my entire head, and I think having the curly perm will help it to lock up instead of trying with straightened hair. I want to grow my hair out very badly and I think having dreadlocks will help keep me from growing bored and chopping it all off to a pixie cut I tend towards, but I'm afraid when I grow out my hair with dreads I'll have to cut them short anyway to take them out. Tips, tricks, advice, experiences, and warnings are greatly appreciated!

Dye

General Questions

Oh, and for lightening hair, lemon juice+sunlight. I've also heard cranberry juice can be used similarly.

And a note on the henna, it's difficult enough to rinse out all the henna from non-dreaded hair so just keep that in mind. I've seen it done on locks but I'm sure it's a pain to get out completely.

Different herbal teas can be used to dye hair darker. I think rosemary is one, and I've also heard of using walnuts. You can google it. Henna is amazing (don't even get me started on it lol) but make sure you use only BODY ART QUALITY henna. I would not recommend buying it as a 'hair dye' like how they sell it in stores. You run the risk of having metals and other non-henna contaminants snuck in there (which can not only just be bad in general, but if you have old chemical dye in your hair or get a chemical dye later bad bad very bad things could happen). I get mine from Tap Dancing Lizard online, high quality and good prices. I've also heard of people dying their hair using kool-aid but I have no idea how to do it or how long it lasts, I'm sure google knows that one too :P (I've used kool-aid to dye wool roving and that turned out awesome but it was white roving, and I've seen someone dye a white poodle pink using red kool aid).
