How to start?

I've learned alot more about dreads since I first wanted them. But I still don't know how to get my hair to knot because it's only 3.5 inches long. I want to go the neglect path but I need help to knot my hair, I know it's short but I figure the earlier I start the better. Do I need to stop using regular shampoo? Can someone explain what to do?

Ya im probably going to have to wait, I don't even know how to tangle my hair, do I just not wash it for a couple of days? Or just be careful and not touch it?

I understand that the best way to grow dreads is neglect, i just don't completely understand the process yet. Could someone tell me how to start out, and cleaning etc? My hair is approximately 3 inches long, is that ok?
